F. H. PALMER. BOX.
No. 477.572. Patented June 21, 1892' l a a lT/VESSES: l7 WE/W01? 3 BY 4. 2% W *6 ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT Genres.
FRANK H. PALMER, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK.
BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,572, dated June 21, 1892. Application filed September 14, 1891- Serial No. 405,631. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK H. PALMER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to boxes for containlng shoe-blacking, grease, and other substances or articles.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved box which is simple and durable in construction and permits the user to conveniently and quickly remove and replace the cover or lid without soiling the hands.
The invention consists of a box-body, a spring forming a handle for the said body, and a cover or lid supported from the spring.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 isa perspective view of the improvement in a closed position. Fig. 2 is a lilxe view of the same in an open position, and Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of part of the box-body and cover.
The improved box is provided with a body A, adapted to be closed by a cover or lid 13, supported on a spring 0, preferably forming the handle for the box A, as is plainly illustrated in the drawings. The box-body A is preferably formed with an outwardly and upwardly extending annular flange D, adapted to be engaged byacorrespondingly-shaped flange E, formed on the cover or lid B. The spring 0 is preferably made of a single piece of spring-wire having one end 0 fastened to the box-body, the end continuing into a bar 0 extending from the box-body and forming part of the handle. The outer end of the arm (J terminates in a coil-spring 0 from which extends the arm 0, terminating in the end 0 attached to the top of the lid or cover B. The two arms 0 and C are arranged opposite each other, and can be taken hold of by l the lid B above the upper edge of the box body A, and then by releasing the pressure on the arm 0 the spring 0 forces the arms C and C apart, whereby the cover B is brought over the box-body A, thus closing the latter. By havingthe flanges D and E formed on the body and cover, as shown in Fig. 3, the box is securely and tightly closed. The flanges D and E also permit of conveniently opening the box in the manner above described, the beveled flange E easily sliding over the flange D when the operator exerts a pressure on the arm 0 in the manner above described. It is understood that in opening the box the arm 0 is pressed toward the arm 0 so that the spring 0 is compressed. The arms 0 and 0 form a convenient handle for the entire box in either an open or closed position. Thus when the box is closed it can be conveniently carried about by taking hold of the handle, and when the cover or lid is removed in the manner above described the box can be conveniently supported in one hand for getting at the contents of the box.
I do not limit myself to the exact construction of the device shown, as it may be varied. For instance, a rigid handle may be attached to the box-body and the cover 13, supported on a spring fastened to the handle, or the handle instead of being rigidly connected with the box may be detachably connected, so as to be conveniently attached or detached. Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent "1. A box comprising a body, a spring forming a handle and supported from the said box-body, and a cover supported on the said spring and adapted to fit on the said boxbody, substantially as shown and described.
2. A box comprising a body formed with cover orlid, the said spring being formed into an outwardly-extending beveled flange, a, lid arms makinga handle, substantially as shown or cover formed with a beveled flange adaptand described.
ed to engage the beveled flange of the said FRANK II. PALMER. 5 box-body, and a spring formed of a single \Vitnesses:
piece of Wire secured at one end to the box- THEO. G. HOSTER,
body and supporting at the other end the said O SEDGWICK.
