Description
leured to the canister UNITED STATES AUGUST SOHILLING, OF SAN EBANCISGO', CALIFORNIA.
CANISTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed November 15, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: i
- Be it known that I, AUGUST SOH LLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Canisters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in canisters such as are usually employed for containing tea, coffee, and other articles, and has for its object to provide novel means for opening and closing the mouth of the canister, holding the opening and closing device against vertical displacement when covering the canister-opening, and retaining it in such closed position,
The object of my invention I accomplish in the manner and by the means hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in WlllCl1- Figure 1 represents a plan or top view of my canister. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the samewhen the lid is thrown open. Fig. 3 is a section in the plane as 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section in the planey y, Fig. 2, on alarger scale than the previous figures.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
- In the drawings, the letter A designates a canister such as generally used for containing tea, ground coffee, or other materials of a similar nature. Said canister is by preference made of sheet metal with a square cross-section and in one of the corners of its top B is an opening, a, as shown in Fig. 2. This opening can beopened or closed by a lid, 0, which swings in a plane parallel to the top on apivot, 1), se-
at or near one corner of the opening a. The top B is secured in the body of the canister somewhat below the upper edges of the sides of the canister, as shown in Fig. 8, and said upper edges are turned in ward to form flanges c, edges of the lid when the which overlap the same is closed, and
serve as stops for the lid to insure its correct position when closed, and also to retain the said lid against vertical displacement when its edges are passed beneath the flanges. The
Patent No. 295,432, dated March 18, 1884.
l arrangement of the lid and the said flanges is also such that when the lid is in its closed position a portion of one of its edges comes into close contact with the flanges, and the frictional contact between these parts tends to retain the lid in its closed position. A coiled spring, (2, encircles the pivot b, and its upper end is connected with the lid by passing such end through a perforation therein at one side of the pivot, while the lower free end of the spring abuts against one wall of the canister, the tension of the spring being such as to have a tendency to throw the lid into its closed position after it has been released by the hand which is used to hold it open. Vhen the lid conveniently discharged through the corner opening.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, substantially as described, of a canister having a corner opening in its top and inwardly-turned flanges, and a lid pivoted to swing above the top of the canister'in a plane parallel to such top, and to pass beneath the flanges.
2. A canister having a top provided with a corner opening, a lid pivoted to swing above said top, means for preventing the lid moving upward when closed, and a spring for throwing the lid into its closed position, substantially as described. I 3. A canister having a top provided with a corner opening, flanges projecting. inwardly above said top, a lid pivoted to swing above the latter and in a plane parallel thereto, for engaging under the flanges, and a spring for throwing the lid to a closed position, to cover the opening, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AUGUST SOHILLING.
