To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, GEORGE W. S'rnoK- LER and GEORGE M. Bownn, citizens of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Containers for Lard and Butter; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appeitains to make and use the same.

The present invention is directed to improvements in containers for lard, butter or the like, and has for its object to so construct a device of this character that the same will be thoroughly sanitary.

A further object of the invention is to provide a container of this character, which is formed from material which can be readily cleansed, said container being preferably provided with a glass cover, so that the con tents thereof can be seen by the purchaser.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a container having a cover, capable of being held in its open position posi tively, and further to provide a cover so constructed that the swinging movement thereof is limited.

With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device showing the cover in its open position. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. l is a sectional view on line 4 l of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawing 1 indicates the container, which is preferably formed from glass, but may be formed from porcelain, enameled ware, or the like. said container having spaced beads 2 and 3, formed at its top, the purpose of which will appear later. A clamping band a is provided, and has formed at its ends eyes 5, which are engaged by a clamping bolt 6. The band is formed preferably from a single length of suitable wire, and is bent intermediate its ends to provide a pair of spaced eyes 7, and an intermediate eye 8. The band is mounted in the space between the heads 2 and 8, which prevent movement of said band upwardly or downwardly. A frame 9 for holding the top 10, is provided and consists of side bars 11, each of which extend across the top 10, and have their ends terminating ininwardly directed loops 12, which are disposed below the plane of the bars 11 so as to engage the under surface of the top, said loops not only serving to hold the top securely attached to the frame, but'also for holding the rubber gasket 13 securely against the under surface of the top 10, said gasket being adapted to engage the rim of the container when the ton is closed, so as to preventbreakage of the top, which is preferably formed from glass, and at the same time to provide a tight joint to prevent dust and dirt from entering the con tainer. The forward loops 12 are connected by a bar 14, which is provided with an intermediate eye 15, said bar being disposed above the top 10. The inner loops 12 terininate in loops 16, which engage the upper surface of the top 10, and have their rear ends terminating in eyes 17, said eyes in turn terminating in feet 18, which are adapted to engage the side of the container when the top is open, and to limit the swinging movement thereof. The eyes 17 register with the eyes 7, and when said eyes are in registry a pivot pin 19 is engaged therein, thereby pivotally connecting the frame 9 to the band at. The side bars 11 are connected by a tie wire 20, which has formed at its center a loop .21, so that the pin 22 may pass thereunder, said pin being passed through the eye 15 and eye 8, when the top is raised, said pin serving to prevent the top from accidentally closing, thereby eliminating the danger of breaking the cover, should the same accidentally fall.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that a container has been provided which is thoroughly sanitary, and one which can be used indefinitely for containing such articles of food as lard, butter or the like, and since the container is made from porcelain, glass or the like, it is obvious that the contents thereof will not become contaminated with the taste of wood, which occurs when material, such as butter and lard, are packed in wooden receptacles.

lVhat is claimed is 1. A container of the class described, having a band carried thereby, a frame hingedly connected to the band, said frame having side bars provided with loops, a ton engaged under the side bars and over the loops, and slidable means carried by the frame for positively holding the top in its raised position.

2. A container of the class described, hav 5 ing a band engaged therewith, spaced eyes carried by the band, a frame comprising side bars, loops formed at the ends of the side bars, a top engaged under the side bars and over the loops, certain of said loops ter- 10 minating in loops which engage on the upper surface of said top, said last named loops terminating in eyes which register With the first named eyes, a pin pivotally connecting said eyes, means for limiting the swinging movement of the top in one direction, and 15 means for positively holding the top in its open position.
