J. S ANDERSON.
LID RAISER. No. 396,972. Patented Jan. 29 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES S. ANDERSON, OF CRESCENT BAY, \VASIIINGTON TERRITORY.
LID-RAISER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,972, dated January 29, 1889.
Application filed June 5, 1888. Serial No.2'76,138. (No nwdeh) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAnEs S. ANDEnsoN, of Crescent Bay, in the county of Clallam and lerritory oi ll'ashington, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lid-Raisers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
Every person is aware ofthe inconvenience experienced in withdrawing articles from boxes, barrels, and the like where the cover has to be lifted and held wit-h one hand while the articles are taken outwith the other. Not only, however, is this inconvenience experienced, but in the ease of large binssuch as those for holding feed, coal, &e.-the covers are so heavy that it is often very d iliieult for a person to open them, even with both hands.
It is the object, therefore, oi my invention to provide a l id-raiser for boxes, barrels, bins, and the like receptaclcs It is also the object of my invention to pro vide a device whereby very heavy lids may be raised without undue exert-hm on the part of the operator.
Finally, my object is to provide a device of so simple a (mnstruetion and so cheaply made that it may be attached. to boxes, barrels, bins, and the like with a comparatively slight increase in the cost of constructioi1.
To attain these oliiject-s my invention therefore consists in certain details of ctmstruction, all as hereinafter tullydescribedand specifically claimed. I
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the figure shtnvs my invention as applied to a lGGtPpltlttlP.
In the drawing the receptacle to which my lid-raiser is attached is shown at A and the cover of saidreceptacle at B, this cover being hinged at c to the body of the receptacle.
Attached to the lid B of the receptacle A by a suitable staple is a rod, (1. This rod is bent at the point i and extends down the side of the receptacle, being attached at its lower end to a suitable treadle, C, this treadle being pivoted to the'side of the receptacle at the point (I.
Secured in the side of the receptacle is a bolt, e,having an eye in its outer end, through which the lifting-rod (z passes and is thereby guided.
It will. be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise mode of attachment of the rod CL tothe lid, as instead of the staple the end of the rod may be flattened and a bolt passed through it into the lid; also, instead of the eyebol t e, a staple. may be used to effect the same result.
The rod o is made of suliicient weight so that it, together with the weight of the lid of the receptacle, will overbalance the weight of the treadle, and thus when the pressure is removed from the treadle the lid will close.
l'l'aving thus descril'led my invention, what I claim. is-- In combination with the lid 1:), hinged to the receptacle, the rod (1, extending alongside the receptacle, having a bent upper end attached to the lid, the treadle (l, pivoted at d and attached to the rod a at its lower end, and the eyebolt e, for guiding said rod in its up-and-(lown movement, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speeilicatitm in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES ANDERSON.
