THOMAS I. BOLGER, OF GLOUCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
GARBAGE-CAN RECEPTACLE.
- Specification of Letters Patent. Patnted J une 28, 1910,
Application led January 23, 1908. Serial No. 412,345.
T o all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, TnoMAs l. BOLGER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Glouceste in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garbage-Can Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to receptacles for holding garbage cans, the objectbeing to provide a receptacle with a disinfecting apparatus wh'ch is so arranged and connected to the cover of the receptacle that disinfectant fluid will be forced into the can when the cover is closed.
Another object of my invention is to proj vide very novel means for operating the handle of the cover so that the handle will be normally held down into the receptacle out of the way.
A further object of my invention 'is to provide a receptacle with two covers which are hinged from opposite sides, one being used for opening the top of the receptacle so as to place garbage in the can arranged therein, and the other being used so as to remove the can.
With these objects in view, thev invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing forming a part of this speciicationz-Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved garbage can receptacle. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through thesame.
In the drawing A indicates a cement base which is provided with a central recess havin a vertical bore communicating therewith forming a drain. Mounted on the base is a cylinder B formed of some suitable plastic material such as cement in which is secured adjacent its upper end a ring C by boltsC, the ring being provided with an offset upper edge C2 in which the annular flange D of a collar D is adapted to be sethe collar being provided with oppositely disposed inwardly projecting portions D2 D3 which are provided with ianges and to which are hinged covers F and G, the cover F being provided with a substantial semi-circular cutout portion, in which the cover G fits and is also provided with a; lug F on which the' cover Gr rests, so as to support the cover Gr flush with the cover F, the cover F also being provided with weighted strips F2 on its under side to each side ofthe cut out portion for holding the saine closed. The cover F is supported by a fiange D4 of the inwardly projecti'ng portion D, and it will be readily seen that the covers work independent of each other, so that either one can be raised or lowered as desired.
Arranged in the receptacle against the ring C is a receptacle H adapted to contain disinfectant liquid which is provided with a spout I-I which extends upwardly from the bottom of the receptacle H, and is provided with an outwardly projecting end which is adapted to extend' over the edge of'an ordinary garbage can I when placed in the receptacle so that the disinfectant sliquid will be forced into the can as will be hereinafter fully described.
Mounted in the receptacle is`a piston J which is provided with a piston rod J which is connected to a crank arm K carried by the cover G so that when the cover is lowered after it has been `raised so as to place garbage in the can, the piston will be forced downwardly and the liquid in the receptacle H will be forced out of the spout onto the garbage which has just been placed in the can. It will be seen that` the disinfectant will be forced onto the garbage as it is placed in the can, so as to prevent the same from giving out a bad odor. The cover G is provided with a slot over which is secured a staple L on its under side, on which is mounted a link handle M which is adapted to be forced upwardly through the slot byv an arm N which is pivotally mounted in the bracket N', secured to the inside of the cover G, the arm being operated by a rod O which extends upwardly through an opening formed in the cover G so that by pressing down on the rod, the link handle M will be forced upwardly through the slot so that it can be readily grasped, so that the cover can be raised. When it is desired to remove the garbage can, the covers are swung upwardly as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A garbage receptacle provided with a collar at its upper edge, a pair of oppositely hinged covers of different sizes connected to said collar, the larger cover being provided with a cut-away portion to receive the smaller cover, a receptacle mounted in said receptacle for holding a disinfecting liquid, a. s out connected to the disinfecting receptac e adjacent its bottom, a piston mounted in said receptacle of a smaller diameter than the receptacle, a piston rod pvotally connected to said piston and a crank arm carried by the smaller cover connected to said piston rod.
2. A garbage can receptacle formed of a plastic materlal having an interior metal rin adjacent its upper end and a collar carrie by seid ring restin upon the edge of said receptacle, said colar being provided with inwardly projecting portions, of covers h1nged to sald portions, one of said covers belng provlded with a eut-away portion to receive the other cover, means for supportmg .the covers flush with each other, e disinfecting receptacle arranged in said first mentioned receptacle and a plunger Working loosely 1n sald disinfecting receptacle oper ated by one of said covers. l
