RECEPTACLE.
VApplication led May 5, 1925. Serial No.'28,151.
rllhis invention relates to improvements in receptacles and more particularly to metallic receptacles of that general character having a hinged closure and an interiorly disposed movablesecondary receptacle therein, with operating means whereby the secondary receptacle may be raised and the cover opened. Such types of receptacles are particularly adapted for use as trash and garbage'contaiiiers, where it is uiidesirableto actually` handle various parts, vvas well as receptacles nets, andthe like, fwhere access to the instruments or materials is desired without the necessity of manually raising the cover or opening' the drawer thereof by direct lcontact. f
Itl is therefore one of the objects off'the present invention to provide a receptacle of simple and practical construction'-which may easily be operatedY to open ther same `thereby to permit access' to the interior. A yfurther object-is to provide a strong and-durable receptacle ofthe above general character of sanitary construction andl having relatively few parts vwhich may be inexpensively manufactured aiidassembled. Y
rkOther objects will bein part obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out in connection withthe accompanying` sheet of drawings illustrating two of the various possible embodiments of the present invention.
Y lThe invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, the combination of parts, and in the unique relation ofthe various members and the Vrelative proportioning and dispositioning` thereof, all as more clearly outlined herein.
To enable others skilled in the art to fully comprehend the underlying features thereof, in order that they may embody the same,
by numerous modifications in structure and relation contemplated by this invention,"
For convenience, the invention will be hereinafter described with relation tof its application to a sanitary garbage or trash can, altho it'is to be, of course, understood that the invention is equally applicable to sanitary trays for' surgical instruments without material modification.
` Referring now to the drawings in detail, 10 indicates the main outer receptacle which is preferably of galvanized sheet iron and Aof cylindricalconstruction, provided with a closure 11 hinged to receptacle 10 in any desired manner, as indicated at`12. The lower portion ci' this'receptacle is provided with a reinforcing bridge member 13, which includes a relatively Hat upper supporting surface and two downwardly extending end portions 14 riveted-orfotherwise' suitably secured to the receptacle 10. One end of this bridge vmay be slightly cut away, togetherA with the outer wall of the receptacle 10, to provide lan' opening-15- in which a-pivoted-` lever 16 is adapted'to be inserted. 'This lever lis supported by Ya pivot pin 1T associated with ythe downwardly extending end of the bridge member 13. In :order to form a durable and "more substantial construction, this lever 16 has one end bent at right angles to provide a pedal or foot engaging member 18,.while vthe opposite end is apertured as at 2O forthe reception of a bolt.'
21 for securing the endr 22`of a T-shaped member thereto, which member Vprojects through slot 19 of the bridge 13; The cross part 23 of this member normally yrests on theiipper surface of the bridge member 13 and isV adapted to engage the bottom A21of an inner or auxiliaryk receptacle or vbucket indicated at 25, which is normally supported on the bridge member 13. This inner 'recep-4 tacle or bucket may be provided with a handle 26,`pivotally mounted on diametrically opposite lugs 27, the handle normally resting upon an inwardly extending ange vportion 2 It will be noted that the cover 11 engages the top of the outer receptacle 10 `throughout the entire circumference. The bucket or inner receptacle 25 is preferably slightly higher than the outer receptacle, thereby to also `engage the under side of the cover 11, thus lmaking a double closure at the lines of contactbetween the closureand bothreceptacles which renders therecepta-cle more sanitary Y and further eliminates the possibility of ants itl Rit)
or [lies getting into the interior ot' the bucket when the device used as a garbage can.
A Yfurther purpose of the construction, as herein outlined, is to permitthe opening and closing` ot' the receptacle with the minimum amount ot trouble and without the necessity olf handling` any of the parte. All that is necessary to etl'eet this operation is for the operator to depress the pedal 18 with his toot, which :auees the T-shaped rneinber 22 and 2233 to raise the bucket 25 to its dotted line position, and the leverage and engagement between the Cover and bucket thereby obtained, to act upon the cover ll causing,` the eaine to swing npwnrdlY to the dotted line position, as indicated. On release of the foot pedal. the bucket is automatically lowered, and the cover o't the eau assumes a tightly closed position.
ln the above, it will be seen that the present invention contemplates a simple and practical receptacle haring,- relativeliT few parte` which may be inexpensively manufactured and aes nbled, and, while particularly applicable as a garbage or trash can may, as above stated, be applied to other purpoeee where i-zanitation ie desired.
ln View o'lf the above, it will be eeen that the Several objects o'lf the invention are achieved and other advantageous results attained. Ae man)7 changes could be made in carryingl out the above eonatruction,` without departingr 'troni the scope ol the invention, 'it ie intended that all matter contained in the. above description or shown in the ae meeste eompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illuetratire and not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
l. In an apparatus oit the character described, in combination, inner and outer receptacles, one of which is movable relatively to the other, a single closure tor said receptacles, means tor raising the inner receptacle whereby it cooperates with the under sur i'uce of the closure to automatically raise the same, said ineaneI comprising a foot lever, a n'ieniber carried by one end of said lever engaginis), the under Side o't the inner receptaele, and a reinforcing ineniber extending across the under :side oi' the outer receptacle for Supporting the inner receptacle, and thru which said tiret named ineniber is die posed.
In an apparatus oi the character deeribed, in combination, a receptacle, a rela titel),7 iiat cover hinged to the upper pari; thereof, a reinoreingl bridge ineniber extend ing,I at-roes.; the lower part ot :said receptacle, a pivote-illy mounted lever, u T-sliaped niember rarried thereby and normally renting upon the upper Surface ot Said bridge meijnber and adapted to be raised therelroijn when the opposite end oi" said lever is depressed, and a receptacle normally restinp` on said bridge ineinber and adaijited to be raised by said lehaped inenjiber when said lever ie actuated. thereby to automalimllly raise the cover to permit. acceeeto said last named receptacle.
