GARBAGE-RECEPTACLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 19, 1912.
Application filed June 17, 1911. Serial No. 633,713.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. DRUM- MOND, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to garbage receptacles and has for its essential objects simplicity, cheapness of construction, and facility of operation.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a top plan View of my novel receptacle, Figs. 2 and 3, sections of the same 011 lines A A and B B respectively of Fig.1, Figs. 4 and 5, partial sections on lines 0 C of Fig. 1, and D D of Fig. 2 re spectively, Fig. 6, a partial side elevation of the receptacle showing the smaller lid open, and Fig. 7, a similar elevation of the same showing the larger lid open.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views.
The body or receptacle is composed of galvanized iron or other suitable material, and comprises a base 1 and cylindrical side wall 2 adapted to be inclosed in the ground 3. Resting upon the rim 5 of the wall 2 is the rim 6 of a pail consisting of a base 7 and cylindrical wall 8 which pail is nested in the body or receptacle so as to be easily slidable therefrom. Ears 1O fixed to the inner face of the pail have perforations 11 to receive the ends of a bail 13 journaled therein. Pins 14 in the wall 8 serve as rests for the ball.
A concavo convex shaped cover 16 rests upon the top of the pail and is provided with a downwardly directed flange 17 overlapping the rims 5 and 6. This cover is hinged to the body in any convenient manner. In its preferred form the hinging connection consists of interspaced arms 19 near the top of the wall 2 perforated as at 20 to receive the pintle 22 passing through the perforations 23 in rearwardly directed ears 24 integral with or fixed to the top of the cover 16.
The cover is provided centrally with an opening 26 around the rear portion of which is a raised flange 26 and provided with a closure consisting of a Substantially circular lid or cover 27 having arectangular extension 28 upon its rear portion and registering 111 the opening, and the whole of the circular portion provided with a marginal bead or rim 29 semi-circular in cross sectlon, overlapping the cover 16 and protecting the joint from moisture and dirt. The ends of the bead 29 form shoulders 30. The cover 27 is pivot-ally connected with the cover 16 as follows: There are depending lugs 31 upon the cover 16 each side of the opening 26; also similar lugs 32 upon the cover 27 adjacent the last mentioned lugs. Passing through openings 33 and 34 upon the lugs 31 and 32 respectively is a pintle 86 fast in the lugs 31. Surrounding this pintle and fixed thereto by a pin 38 in a V shaped loop intermediate its length, is a helical spring 39 which has its forwardly directed free ends 40 pressing upwardly against the under side of the cover 27 to elevate the same. Excessive upward and rearward travel of the cover 27 is prevented by the contact of the shoulders 30 with the upper face of the cover 16."
Passing through an opening 44 in the cover 16 is a vertical rod 45 to whose top is fixed a flat circular head 47, and provided at its bottom with a shoulder 48 and vertical ears 49 in which is pivoted by a pin 51 the outer end of the horizontal arm 52 of an angular or bell crank lever pivoted at its angular portion upon a pin 54 in ears 55 upon the cover 16, and upon whose vertical arm 56 is a lip 57 extending over the head 29. A spiral spring 60 surrounds the rod 45 with one end pressing against the head 47, and the other end resting upon the top face ofthe cover 16. The upward pressure of this spring against the head 47 forces the lip 57 over the beaded portion 29 of the cover 27; and the manual depression of the head 47 removes the lip from the beaded portion and permits the cover 27 to rise to the vertical position shown in Fig. 6, under the influence of the spring 39. The depression of the head 47 is eifected by the sole of the foot; and the beveled or inclined shape of the top of the lip 57 facilitates its action as a latch which rearwardly yields when the cover 27 is by the operators foot pressed downwardly again into closed position after the deposit through the opening 26 of the garbage intended for the pail below. The cover is maintained in closed p0- sition by gravity.
When it is desired to remove the garbage, the operator grasps the handle 47 with the hand and pulls upwardly thereon, and by virtue of the shoulder 48 the cover is lifted without strain upon the spring or upon the lever mechanism. In Fig. 7 is shown the outer cover 16 open or elevated.
It will be noted that for domestic use my device may be operated solely by the feet, and that there are a minimum of parts, and so arranged that the interior is inaccessible to animals, and that the cover 16 is not subject to scaling by congealed moisture.
That I claim is 1. In a garbage receptacle, the combination with the body, a cover inclosing the body and provided with an opening, hinge connections between the cover and the body,
a lid pivotally mounted upon the cover and registering in the opening, pivotally mounted lid-controlling means on the cover projecting through an opening in the same, and a depressible spring-actuated member pivotally connected therewith.
2. In a garbage receptacle, a body, a cover therefor provided with an opening in its top, a lid pivotally connected with the cover and registering in said opening, a pivotally mounted catch extending through said cover to hold the lid closed, and vertically-movable means on said cover controlling the catch and spring actuated to hold it in locked position.
3. In a garbage receptacle, the combination with a body, of a cover therefor and provided with a concentric opening, a lid registering in said opening, a spring hinge connecting said cover and lid, the spring of the hinge pressing upwardly against the lid, and pivotal means on the cover projecting upwardly through an opening therein for holding the lid against the upward pressure of the spring, said lid provided with a laterally extending marginal bead overlapping the cover and whose ends form shoulders to abut against the cover when the lid is raised.
4;. In a garbage receptacle, the combina tion with the body, of a cover inclosing the body and provided with an opening, a. hinge connecting the cover and the body, a lid registering in the opening and having a hinged connection with the cover, a rod slidably mounted in the cover adjacent the lid, and provided with a shoulder beneath the cover for engagement therewith, and
connecting the cover and the body, a lid registering in the opening and having a hinged connection with the cover, a rod slidably mounted in the cover adjacent the V lid, a lever comprising two arms pivotally mounted upon the c0ver,'one of said arms being pivotally connected with the rod, and a projection upon the other arm engaging the lid.
6. In a garbage receptacle, the combination with the body, of a cover pivotally connected with the body and provided with an opening, a lid registering with the opening and having a hinged connection with the cover, a vertical rod slidably mounted in the cover, a head upon the rod above the cover, a shoulder upon the rod below the cover for engagement therewith, a spring upon the rod having one end resting upon the cover and its other end abutting against the head, an angular lever pivotally mounted upon the cover comprising one arm pivotally connected with the rod, and a second arm extending above the cover, and a lateral projection upon the second arm provided with a beveled upper face and engaging the lid with its lower face. 0
7 In a garbage receptacle, a body, a
pivotally mounted cover having an opening said opening, said lid having a shoulder to contact with the upper face of the cover to prevent excess upward and rearward travel of said cover, and means for lifting said cover and releasing the lid.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
