Application inea october 1s, 1915. serial No. 56,505.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD FREDERICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Loretto, inthe county of Boone and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Odorless Covers for Garbage-Cans, of which the `followingis a specification. i i j Y Myl invention relates ,to receptacles and more particularly to an odorless garbage can. a
The primary object of my invention resides in the provision of `an improved closing means for the can or receptacle for permitting of `the emptying of a small amount of garbage into the can without having the top lid or` cover of the can in an opened position before the small quantity has been released or deposited, said closing means being removable after the can has been filled to permit of the application of an ordinary can cover.
Another object of my invention resides in the means for mounting the garbage deposit boX, the latter being preferably rotatably arranged and normally disposed above the supporting arm and beneath the pivoted flap on the lid, said boX being rotatable after it is filled and the flap has been closed, to permit of the depositing of a small quantity of garbage intoV the receptacle. Y A further objectof my invention resides in the provision of a device of the character described that is `simple in construction, ecient in operation and one that can be manufactured and placed on the market at a minimum cost. y s i Y Other `objects as well as the nature, char acteristic features and` scope of my invention will be more .readily understood from the following description taken in, connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims forming a part of this specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional view of my invention; and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken through the deposit box, thedotted lines illustrating the positionV assumed by the deposit boX when the garbage that was contained therein has been released.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate like or corresponding parts throughout the different views, I provide a receptacle or can 1, formed of any desirable metal and preferably of a cylindrical contour. On the outer periphery, preferably at diametrically opposite points are handles 2 for facilitating the moving of the receptacle from place to place, the upper edge of the receptacle having my improved closing means removably associated therewith.
The closing means in this instance consists essentially of a lid 3 similar in contour to the receptacle, having a iange 4 depending therefrom, the flange being arranged in `close relation with the outer periphery of the receptacle 1, the extreme lower edge of the flange resting upon an annular rib 5 formed integral with the outer walls of the receptacle. Arranged transversely of the receptacle is a supporting cross arm 6, the respective ends of which are bent upwardly at right angles as indicated by the numeral 7 and arranged in close relation with the upper inner wall of the receptacle to provide feet, the free ends of which are offset to provide engaging toes 8, the latter being secured to the liange 4: by suitable fastening devices 9.
Rotatably mounted intermediate the ends of the arms 6 and through the raised portion 10 in the lid 3 is a shaft 11, said shaft being supported through the medium of a pin 12 which incidentally secures the crank handle 13 to the shaft for a purpose to be hereinafter described. A washer 141 is arranged on the opposite screw threaded end of the shaft, said washer being maintained in close relation with the under surface of the arm through the medium of a suitable adjusting element 15. Rigidly associated .with the shaft 11 is my improved deposit Vbox 16, consisting preferably of a rectangular hollow body having top and bottom removed, connection being made between the lbox and the shaft through the medium of suitable connecting elements 17, the bases of which are bolted as indicated by the numeral 18 to the boX. The threaded shank of each of the elements is extended through the shaft and engaged by a suitable nut 19.
Thecross arm is preferably enlarged from a point intermediate its ends to one end to provide a rectangular supporting platform 20, said platform being also positioned directly beneath a rectangular opening 21 in the lid 3, which opening is incidentally closed through the medium of a rectangular flap 22 resiliently and pivotally mounted.
Normally this flap 22 is closed and arranged above the deposit boX 16, a bottom for which is provided by the platform 20. Now by"ro tating the crank handle 13 after a limited quantity of garbage has been placed in the garbage box, and after the flap has been closed, the garbage is deposited withinthe receptacle 1, no odor being allowed to escapev during this operation. By rotating the deposit boX it may be again arranged above the supporting platform 20 whereupon the flap may be raised to allow the deposit box being desire to be understood that I am not to be limited to the exact details shown, however, I desire that great stress be laid upon the `arrangement of the novel closing means for a garbage receptacle, the latter being arranged to permit of the depositing of a limited quantity of garbage within the receptacle without allowing odors to escape.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it 'can easily be seen that l have provided a device that is simple in construction, containing but a few simple parts that can be cheaply manufactured and assembled and when assembled can be placed upon the market and sold at a minimum cost.
It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the preferred embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in detail of construction, proportion and arrangement of the parts may be ma de with in the scope of the appended claims and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
Havingv thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A cover for receptacles including a lid provided with an opening, a flap for closing the opening, a supporting arm carried beneath thc opening in the lid, a deposit box associated with the lid and supporting arm and normally arranged beneath the opening and above the arm so that the arm consti- Vtutes a bottom for the boX, and means for Copies of this patent may be obtained for rotating the boX to deposit material within the receptaclewith which the closure is associated.
A closure for receptacles including a lid having an opening therein, supporting means extending transversely of the lid, and rotatably mounted means between the lid and thesupporting means and normally arranged beneath the openingfor receiving a quantity of refuse preparatory to depositw n ing"V the refuse inV a receptacle Vwhen the means neath the opening and above the support-V ing means so that the supporting means serves as a bottom for the box. v Y
'i. AV closure'for receptacles includingfin combination with a receptacle, a `lid provided with an opening, a'fiap for closing said opening, a supporting platform depending from the li`d`,\aI deposit boX associated with the lid and supporting platform normally arranged beneath the opening and above the supporting platform for receiving a quantity of material without allowing odors to escape from the receptacle, and means for rotating the deposit boX for de positing the material within the receptacle without allowing odors tov escape therefrom.
5. A closure for receptaclesv including in combination with a receptacle, a lid having an opening therein, a fiap associated Vwith the lid and above the opening,a cross arm rigidly connected to Vthelidand depending from the lid, a Vsupporting platform formed b v enlarging the arm lbeneaththe opening,
a shaft rotatably mounted in the lidiand arm, a deposit box rigidlyl carried by the shaft and positioned ybeneath the opening ioo and the supporting platform so-that the platform'will serve as a bottom, anda crank handle associated with the shaft for rotat- -ing the boX to ypermit of refuse being emptied into the receptacle without allowing odors to escape therefrom.
Intestimony whereof I aiiix my vsignatur@ in presence of two witnesses.
HOWARD F. FREDERICK.
