full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and'use the same.

M yinvention relates to cans more especially intended to hold garbage or like odorous substances.

My invention consists in the peculiar construction of said can, whereby the same when covered is sealed.

My invention also consists in'other details of construction to be fully set forth and claimed.

Fig. IV is a sectional view of a central portion of a cover, illustrating my preferred construction of relief or air-escape valve I-Ieretofore and before my invention various constructions of this class of cans have been devised with the object in view of so sealing the cover to the body as to prevent the escape of obnoxious or injurious gasesor odors. This is essential, inasmuch as on account of the use to which these cans are put it is necessary that the covers form an air-tight connection with the body of the can. It is also essential that the cover of the can may be quickly and easily removed from the body and easily and quickly replaced thereon.

It is therefore the object of my invention to provide a construction which embodies the above features and which shall be economical to construct, while at the same time shall be effective in operation.

B represents the bottom of the can, which, if preferred, may be so formed as to extend outward from the body, thus forming an annular flange b. The bottom B is secured to the body portion A'in any suitable manner and, if desired, may be formed integral therewith.

These stavesor cleats C serve to reinforce the body A of the receptacle and protect the same from indentation or injury during the hard usage to which these receptacles are subjected in handling and emptying the same.

D represents an annular trough which is located at and surrounds the upper portion of the body A. This trough D is made liquidtight and is intended to receive or contain the The liquid seal in this trough D may be water or may be a disinfectant con sisting of some disinfectant or antiseptic substance mixed with the water. It will be noticed that the trough D extends outward from is of more or less importance, inasmuch as itadds ,to the appearance of the receptacle, while at the same time the trough D is less liable to become injured while emptying the receptacle.

E represents the cover of the receptacle, which is provided with an annular flange e. The flange e is soformed and located as to be received in the trough D and is preferably so located as to fit loosely around theinner walls of said trough, thus keeping the cover from shifting. An annular horizontal flange ef may be provided, said flange extending out far enough to form acover for the trough D. This prevents the evaporation of the liquid seal when thecan is in exposed position-such, for instance, as in the sun.

A spiral spring F is located around the stem f and beneath the handle F for automatically closing the said valve. The purpose of the valve F is to allow of the escape of the air when closing the receptacle, or, in other words, when placing the cover in position, thus avoiding the forcing out of the water seal by overdue air-pressure when placing the cover. A handle G is located above the valve F in such position that the said valve can be easily operated with the fingers of the same hand that manipulates the cover. The valve F is also used'and employed in removing the cover E from the receptacle, thus allowing the cover to be more easily removed without materially disturbing the liquid seal.

By constructing a cam or receptacle of this character, as above set forth and according to my invention, I obtain a receptacle which is economical to construct, easy to operate or cover, absolutely odorless when covered, and convenient to fill or empty, while at the same time all parts may be easily cleaned, inasmuch as there are no undercut portions, such as looks or the like.

While I have set forth in this specification and shown in the drawings any preferred method of constructing the body of the can and securing the'sealing-trough thereto and also my preferred method of constructing the valve in the cover of the can or receptacle, still I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to these details, inasmuch as certain modifications may be made without departing from my invention.

What I claim is 1. In a garbage-receptacle of the type set forth, the combination with a can having an external trough located at or near its top; an annular horizontal flange at its bottom extending beyond the body of the can, and cleats, fastened at intervals around the body portion of the can, resting upon the bottom flange and fitting tightly under and supporting the external trough; of a cover provided with an annular depending flange adapted to enter the trough, and an annular horizontal flange adapted to extend over and cover said trough, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a garbage-receptacle of the type set forth, the combination with a can having an external trough located at or near its top; an annular horizontal flange at its bottom extending beyond the body of the can, and cleats, fastened at intervals around the body portion of the can, resting upon the bottom flange and fitting tightly under and supporting the external trough; of a cover provided with an annular depending flange adapted to enter the trough, and an annular horizontal flange adapted to extend over and cover said trough, and having a handle; a vent-opening immediately under the handle, and a springactuated valve which normally closes the vent-opening, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a garbage-receptacle of the type set forth, the combination with a can, consisting of a cylindrical body portion A provided, at its lower end, with a bottom B, having an annular horizontal flange Z), at its upper end with an external trough D, and with cleats C, fastened at intervals around the side, resting on the flange l) and fitting under and sup porting the trough D; of a cover E provided with an annular depending flange 6, and an annular horizontal flange 6, and having a handle G; a vent-opening located immediately under the handle and a spring-actuated valve F which normally closes said vent-opening, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
