To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN E. TROTTIER, a a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Cans, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to garbage cans and like receptacles. The principal object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having improved means for supporting a disinfectant to neutralize the offensive odor from the contents of the can and to destroy vermin in the can.

Another object of the invention is provide such a receptacle having a disinfectant container which may be readily mounted in place to permit the disinfectant to act upon the material in the receptacle without the necessity of opening the receptacle.

Other features, objects and advantages will appear more fully in the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification and illustrating one embodiment of the invention and in appended claims.

Referring to the drawing, the can 1 comprises a body portion and a removable cover 2 which is provided with a downwardly extending flange fitting over the body of the can. In order to prevent the passage of the objectionable odors out of the can between the cover and the body of the can, the body of the can has secured to the outside thereof an annular member 3'upon which the flanged periphery of the cover 2 is adapted to rest. The lower edge of the cover and the top edge of the memberB may be beaded,- as shown. With this construction the joint between the cover and can is tightly closed against the passage of the obnoxious gases.

The cover 2 is provided, as shown, with a central opening extending through the same, the outer wall of this opening being formed of a threaded flange 4 depending from the top wall of the cover. Arranged in this opening is a disinfectant container 5 which,

With this con struction it will be seen that the disinfectant container may be screwed into place in the cover or bodily detached from the cover without the necessity of lifting the cover 2 of the garbage can or taking hold of any parts located in the inside of the can and I therefore likely to become soiled.

The disinfectant container is provided with a cover 11 which, as shown, has a downwardly extending flange 12 threaded into the part 6 of the container, this cover having an outwardly extending portion 14: which engages at the top of the part 6 when the cover is screwed down in position. To facilitate the screwing of the cover into or out of place it is formed with substantially semicircular depressions 15 leaving a central ridge 16 between them which can be readily engaged between the thumb and fin ers. The cover as constructed is detachable rom the disinfectant container without removing the disinfectant container 5 from the cover of the can 1.

A suitable disinfectant, such as the prod not known commercially as UN, may be poured in liquid form directly into the disinfectant container. Preferably, however, I place in the receptacle layers 17 of absorbent material, such as cotton, into which the liquid disinfectant is poured. The combination of a garbage receptacle having a cover to permit the opening and closing of the receptacle, and a germicide or disinfectant container detachably connected with .said cover and arranged to be supported thereby within the closed receptacle, the disinfectant holding part of said container being formed of wire'gauze of a mesh to support a liquid without permitting the liquid to run through the same, substantially as described.

The combination of a garbage receptacle having a cover to permit the opening and closing of the receptacle, an opening through said cover, and a disinfectant container detachably carried by said cover and projecting through said opening, said container being formed of wire gauze of a inesh to support a disinfectant liquid without the liquid running through the same and arranged to permit the disinfectant therein to from the act on the material in the receptacle and be- 3. The combination of a garbage receptacle having a cover and a disinfectant container carried by said cover-and formed with a wire guaze portion of a. mesh to support a liquid without permitting passage of the liquid therethrough and projecting into the receptacle to permit the disinfectant to act on the material in the receptacle, said disinfectant container being bodily removable from the receptacle without lifting the cover from its closed position.

In combination, a garbage receptacle provided with a cover. having an opening therethrough, a disinfectant container detachably carried by said cover and having a bottom of fine wire guaze of a mesh to support a liquid without the liquid running through the same, said container projecting through said opening and being arranged to permit the disinfectant therein to act on the material in the receptacle, and said container being bodily removable from the receptacle without lifting the cover from closed position.
