J. .c. FISCHER GERMICIDE REGEPTAGLE AND COVER J ly 24,1923- 1,462,693
Filed July 2, 1921 v INVENTOR. Juseph C-F'1schar-- A TGRNEY.
Patented July 24, 1923..
UNITED. STATES 1,462,693 PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH C. FISCHER, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
GERMICIDE RECEPTACLE AND COVER.
Application filed July 2,
T all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn C. FISCHER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of lVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Germicide Receptacles and Covers, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification. I
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in receptacles having a removable cover, and refers more particularly to that type of receptacle employed for handling garbage and the like.
In the handling of garbage and the like it is desirable that means be employed to combat the fly and other vermin that are attracted thereto. in order to prevent the laying of eggs in the refuse within the receptacle and consequently materially reduce the danger to the health of the community as will be readily apparent.
Many efforts have been made along this line but they have all failed due to the receptacle construction involved, which made the cost to the user practically prohibitive. Hence it is an object ofthisinvention to provide a receptacle sojdesigned tha-t flies and other vermin will 'be prevented from entering the same by reason of certain. disinfectants, deodorants, or the like, carried by the receptacle as to discharge fumes thereinto which will either destroy the vermin or drive the same therefrom.
In the type of the garbage receptacle having a means for projecting fumes thereinto as now employed, it is necessary to replenish the supply of disinfectant, deodorant, or the like, to handle the parts of the can which is a disagreeable task and consequently highly objectionable. With this in mind, it is another object of the present invention to provide means for readily replenishing the supply of disinfectant, deodorant, or the like by the mere removal of an outside plug or cap and pouring thereinto the disinfectant or deodorant.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a garbage receptacle of the class described which is preferably formed with a surrounding chamber for receiving a germicide and which chamber has its upper end arranged to communicate with the receptacle interior, in order to discharge fumes from the germicide chamber thereinto, whereby,
1921. Serial No. 482,183.
upon the removal of the receptacle cover a wall or film of disinfectant fumes will lay close to the receptacle mouth as will be readily obvious.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a receptacle of the class described which is so designed and constructed as to permit its production in quantities at a comparatively low cost and one which will perform its functions in a highly desirable manner. I I
lVith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description pros ceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment ofmy invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:
Figure l is a side view of a receptacle embodying my invention, and
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary de tailed view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 and illustrating the manner of inserting the screen cylinder providing the germicide cover chamber outlet. I
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, the numeral 5 designates the receptacle proper which is adapted to receive the garbage and the like, and 6 the cover therefor, which has a handle 7 for convenience in removing the same. The receptacle proper is provided with an inner casing 8 and an outer casing 9 having their walls separated to provide a chamber, or compartment, 10 for receiving a suitable material which is best adapted to retain a suitable germicide. The bottom of the chamher, or compartment, 10 is closed by the bottom 11 of the receptacle and the top thereof is closed by extending the outer end of the casing 9 beyond the inner casing end then directing the same inwardly and downwardly to be secured to the inner casing in any suitable manner, as at 12, that portion of the outer casing extension closing the upper end of the chamber 10 being perforated, as at 13, to permit the escapage of fumes from rated with a suitable germicide through an opening 18 in the wall 15 which is closed by a readily removable plug or cap 19. The inner wall 14 is centrally apertured and provided with an instruck flange 20 through which is passed an inverted cup-shaped screen member, or perforated cylinder, 21 which has its outer end flanged, as at 22, to engage with that portion of the wall 14 surrounding the aperture therein, the flange 20 being firmly clamped or otherwise secured against the wall 14 by instruck lips or ears 23, see Figure 2. The lips 23 are preferably struck from the wall 1% and are bent over the flange 22 of the screen member 21 after it has been projected intothe space 16 through the aperture in wall 14:.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be readily apparent that the fumes given 0H by the germic ide substance completely envelopes the mouth of the receptacle so that when the cover is removed therefrom, for various reasons, anyflies or other vermin who may seek to consume the contents or lay their eggs therein, will be unable to enter. Furthermore it will be readily seen that with the cover in place the fumes from the germicide contained within the spaceor chamber 16 will enter the receptacle through the outlet furnished by the screen member 21.
lVhat I claim as my invention is:
1 A receptacle of the class described, comprising an inner and an outer casing of clifferent diameters to provide a space therebetween adapted to receive a germicide, the upper end of the outer casing being extended beyond the upper end of the inner casing and then bent inwardly to close the upper end of said space, that portion of the outer casing extension enclosing the space being apertured to provide an outlet into the receptacle for fumes given off by the germicide.
2. In a device of the class described, a hollow cover having. an opening in its bottom communicating with the cover interior, an instruck flange surrounding said opening an inverted cup-shaped screen'member inserted in said opening and braced by said flange, a flange on the rim of the screen member for limiting its movement into the cover interior, clamp means engageable with the flange of said screen member to secure the same in position, and a-filling spout for supplying the interior of the cover with agermicide the fumes of which pass outwardly through the screen member.
3. A receptacle of the class described,'c0mprising an inner and an outer casing of clifferent diameters to provide a space therebetween adapted to receive a germicide, and an extension on the upper end of the outer casing directed inwardly from a point outwardly of the outer end of the inner casing and then downwardly for connection with the inner casing to provide an inclined closure for thegermicide receiving space, said closure having openings therein from which the fumes from the germicide in said space are emitted to commingle and form a film closing the top of the inner casing.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature.
JOSEPH c. FISCHER.
