Description

up (are rarunr FREDICK EACH AND HERMAN SILVERMAN, OF NEW YORK, Ill. Y.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 11, 1916. serial Ito. 107,169.
To all wiwm it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICK BACEE and HERMAN SILVERMAN, residents of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, and citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates more particularly to covers for garbage cans for household or other purposes.
this specification,
Heretotore, so far as we are aware, no provision has been made whereby the germs and vermin which collect in garbage cans may be destroyed, and especially in those cans which are used about the house and the larger cans or barrels which are placed upon the sidewalk for carting away. l'hese cans are usually of such a character as to form breeding places for flies and the ihe and are otherwise objectionable by reason of the odors arising from the garhage contained in the cans or receptacles.
Une of the principal objects of the present invention is to provide a cover which is adapted to hold an element or agent which is adapted not only to destroy the germs or vermin lihely to collect in garbage receptacles but also deodorise the contents of such receptacles, thus making said receptacles less objectionable than such devices as ordinarily employed.
Another object of the invention is to proride a simple and eflicient cover in which germ. destroying, disinfecting or deodorizing agent may be readily accessible.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a cover which is adaptedior use in connection with the various forms and sizes of receptacles.
A still object of the invention is provide a cover which is simple and eflective in construction and inexpensive to manufacture With these other objects in view, the invention be more particularly-described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of and will then be pointed out in the claim at the end of the description.
in. the drawings, F l is a vertical section one town of the invention showing the same applied to a receptacle or contamer.
Fig. 2 is a detail inverted plan of the cover; and
Fig. 3 is a vertical section of a difl'erent form of ccver.
The receptacle 10 may be in the form of a pail or barrel and may be cylindrical or of any other desired shape, and adapted to fit over the open end of the receptacle 10 is a cover ll, conforming to the shape of the receptacle l and forming a closure for the same. As shown the receptacle is cylindrical and the cover 11 is therefore of a similar shape. The cover 11 provided with an annular ofl-setportion 14C in which may be arranged the packing 15 of any suitable material and which is adapted to rest upon the beaded end 16 of the receptacle 10 or otherwise, said flange 13 being beaded, as at 17, for strength ening purposes. lhe flange 13 is adapted to fit about the upper open end of the receptacle 10 and the packing 15 is adapted to form a seal between the cover and the receptacle. The cover body has a curved portion 18 terminating in a depressed. part 19. This depressed part 19 has a disk like part or top 20 and an annular flange 21 and on the top 20 is a handle E22 by which the cover may be removed from or placed over the receptacle. under the depressed part 19 and plate is adapted to form a chamber in the chamber 24 is located a liquid absorbing substance 25, as felt, cotton waste or any other suitable material which is adapted to contain and hold in suspense a gennicide or any suitable deodorizing or disinfecting su stance which ma or may not he a volatile nature, as or example, carbolic acid, sulfuric acid, chlorin, permanganate of potash, etc. The flange 21 may be provided with a. number of openings or apertures 2d and the plate 23 may also be provided with a number of openings or 27'. The purpose of the openings 26 permit the vapor or fumes of the germ destroying or deodorizing substance to pass through said openings 26 about the receptacle to prevent flies or other insects from collecting upon the outside of the cover or receptacle. The opening 2? which open the receptacle slightly Patented July a, rear.
has its body 12 flange l3 and an A. disk-like plate 23 is located ill are for the purpose of permitting either a part of the substance held by the body 25 to pass into the receptacle or .the fumes therefrom to pass into the receptacle to destroy thehgerms or to deodorize the contents or hot In the larger receptacles which are usually placed outside of the house for removal by public conveyances, it is desirable that the germ destroyer or deodorizing agent be inaccessible in order to prevent tampering with the same. For this purpose, and in addition to making the body 25 accessible for substituting other bodies or substances, the plate 23 is hinged at 28 to the curved portion 18 and diametrically opposite the hinge 28 is a hasp 29 which is made to fit over a staple 30. A lock 31 is adapted to hold the hasp or clasp against tampering but permits access to the body 25 by the person having a key to the lock.
In Fig. 3 the construction is substantially the same as that described except that the plate 32 is rigidly secured to or formed integral with the body 12 of the cover instead of hinged thereto so that the body containing the germ destroying or deodorizing substances may be held permanently within the chamber containing the same. Under some conditions the material used in the cover will last substantially the life of the cover itself and neither access nor replacing of the material is for that reason required. In many instances however it is desirable that the germ destroying body be accessible and such provision is made in the construction shown in It and 2. In this case and in the other construction the cover with or Without the absorbent body is sold as an article of ac ate manufacture, leaving the germicide in most instances to be applied by the housewife or other person.
From the foregoing it will be evident that simple and eflicient means are provided whereby garbage receptacles may be prevented from collecting germs and serving as a breeding place for flies or other insects; that the receptacle by bein sealed by the cover against the entrance 0 air and having the fumes or the germ destroying or deodorizing material depositecl within the receptacle, the contents of the receptacle therefore become less objectionable, and that the cover as constructed may be readily made and is inexpensive to manufacture.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A cover for a garbage receptacle, comprising a body part having a. central raised portion forming a chamber, said chamber having an impert'orate top wall and perforated side walls, a perforated plate hinged to the under side of the body part and forming a closure for the lower end of said chamber, means for locking the hinged plate in closed position, said body part having a depending annular flange adjacent its outer edge adapted to embrace the upper end of a receptacle, and a packing confined in an annular groove adjacent to said flange and adapted to engage the upper edge of a receptacle when the cover is placed thereon.
This specification signed this 29th day of June, A. D. 1916.
