CONTAINER FOR DISINFECTANTS.
ilpplication filed July 10, 1913. Serial No. 778,305.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARNIM L. BEHRENDT, a subject of the mperor of Germany, and
a resident of Brooklyn, county of- Kings, and
State of New Yor have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Containers for Disinfectants, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved device for holdingand permitting the gradual escape or giving off of a disinfectant or'like material, for instance, mate-rial for deodorizing, although 1t can be used for containing materials of different kinds and in different 15 situations, as will be evident. p
l The invention is particularly designed for use in conjunction with garbage cans and the like, the device being constructed to eliminate the possibility of spilling which would be present if the container was one utilizing. liquid disinfectant, the holder or container having a filling or a pad of absorbent material whichholds the disinfectant or deodorizer and permits it to escape gradually by evaporation, the gasespassing into 'thecan, or other device in whichthe container is placed, by reason of openings provided for in the container. 1
The invention also consists in making a container which has spaced ribs at. the top, or a similar structure which acts both to confine the" absorbent in the container and to insure spaces between the element to which the container, is fastened and the container itself for the escape of gas from the absorbent.
The inventionfis illustrated in the accomQ panying drawing, in wh1oh Figure 1 is a view of a can, the top part being shownin section with the container attached to the lid of a can. Fig. 2 is a top View of the container with the absorbent material 'removed, and Fig. 3 is a section through Fig. 2, but showing the absorbent material within the container;
being of substantially flat, form, this form 5 being provided because it does not interfere It will be evident that the container can the can having a lid is a with the filling of the can. Garbage cans very often are em tied at intervals that are widely separated and are thus frequently filled to their capacity, and it is to permit this filling that the flat shape is devised, the container 13 shown in Fig. 1 having an open top which is spaced from the bottom of the lid by a washer 1 1, the washer being arranged around a screw 15 which passes through the container and through the washer and also through the top of the lid, being held in place by a nut 16. The washer insures the space 17 being left between the top of the container and the inside face of the top of the lid so that gases can escape from the container. To prevent spilling and tonecessitate a slow evaporation of the disinfectant, I fill the container with absorbent material. A
The container is shown in detail in Figs. 2 and 3 with a slight change. The container shown in Figs. 2 and 3 consists of a bottom 18 and sides 19, the general shape of the container being flat, and absorbent material 20 is placed in the holder, the absorbent material being felt, waste, fiber, or similar material, and being soaked or saturated with a suitable disinfectant which keeps the flies from a can and also acts to kill germs which maygenera'te in the garbage or similar material contained in the can. Separated ribs 21 which are preferably arranged in the shape of a spider with turned-over ends 22 to embrace the flange 23 at the top edge of the side 19, act to confinethe absorbent material in the container, the cut-away part between the ribs forming space to permit the thorough saturation of the material, the spaces insuring oration from the absorbent, between the ribs on the top edge, formed by the ribs, the top edge of the sides of the container and the inner face of the lid, or otherv surface to which the device is secured, permit such escape.
One form of fastening means is shown in the drawing consisting of a screw 15 passing through the through an element to which the container flixed. Having thus I claim is The combination with the lid of a can,of a substantially fiat container having imperforate bottom and side walls, a spider on since the spaces container and also into or described my invention, what the top of the container, an absorbent material in said receptacle, and a screw passing through the center of the container and projecting above it for securing the container to the lid, the spider engaging the lid above the receptacle to act as a stop for the movement of the container toward the lid when it is fastened in place thus insuring spaces between the arms thereof and between the 10 top edge of the side walls and the lid for the escape of evaporated disinfectant from the container.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 9th day of Ju1y,'1913.
