Description

' SANITARY GARBAGE CAN `Filed Nov. 1, 1944 Inventor 'I 2 Zak/ Pf] f'me/ Patentecl Aug. 12, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SANITARY GARBAGE CAN Charles Roy Gamber, Houston, Pa.
Application November 1, 1944, Serial No. 561,422
2 Claims.
This invention relates to garbage cans and has for its object to provide a sealing top for such cans.
Another object of the invention is to provide a can lid so formed that odors cannot escape therefrom, nor insects enter the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a can lid so formed as to seal a can with a deodorant and insecticide.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a can lid with a sealing pad and means for automatically saturating the pad with a deodorizing insecticide,
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of my improved can and lid,
Figure 2 is a similar view shown partly in section,
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of a lid partly broken away, and
Figure 4 is a greatly enlarged detail sectional view of a channel member showing an edge of a can seated therein.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the following specification and in the several views in the drawings and in which Ii] indicates my improved garbage can including the can I I, and lid I2, the latter embracing the principal elements of my invention. This lid is of a suici'ently larger diameter than that of the can to inclose an annular channel member I3, within its depending flange I4, and which member I3, is welded or otherwise Xedly attached to the lid.
The member I3 is shaped to form inner and outer side walls I5 and I6, respectively, a top wall I'I, and two slightly spaced apart bottom wall sections I8 and I9, the edges 2l! and 2|, of said sections being turned up at right angles to form side walls for the spaced apart annular channels 22 and 23, an annular seat 24, for the upper edge 25 of the can II, and also a seat for an annular felt or other suitable pad 2B. The inner Corners 21 and 2B, of the channels 22 and 23, are formed arcuate in order to provide easy access of the edge 25 of the can when the lid is placed thereon. The upper edges 29 and 3U, of the flanges 2li and 2 I, may be sufficiently close to one another to frictionally engage the can edge 25, when the lid is placed thereon.
In order to flll the channels 22 and 23., it is only necessary to invert the lid and pour a liquid in through the space 24, which liquid will seep through the member 26, and into the channels. Ihis operation need be repeated about twice a year for the interior of the member I4 is practically airtight, thus permitting only slight evaporation.
I have found through practical use oi one of these cans that it is avoided by all insects, rodents, dogs and cats rather than their seeking entry thereinto. Maggots are avoided as insects cannot enter and the can has not been dumped over and the contents scattered by varmints.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a closer understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Minor changes in shape, size and rearrangement of details and parts such as come within the purview of the invention claimed may :be resorted to, in actual practice, if desired.
That which I claim as new is:
1. In combination with a garbage can and a sealing cover removably supported upon the upper edge thereof, said cover having an integral peripherally disposed depending flange, an annular deodorizing insecticide receiving chamber disposed in contact with and secured to the inner adjacent surfaces of said cover and flange eX- tending flush with the lower edge of said flange, said chamber being shaped to provide concentrically arranged channels having their inner adjacent walls extending upwardly in spaced parallel relation for frictionally engaging and receiving the upper end of said can when said cover is placed thereon, a deodorizing insecticide in said channels, and a handle on the outer surface of said cover.
2. In combination with a garbage can and a sealing cover removably supported upon the upper edge thereof, said cover having an integral peripherally disposed depending flange, an annular deodorizing insecticide receiving chamber disposed in contact with and secured to the inner adjacent surfaces of said cover and flange eX- tending flush with the lower edge of said ange, said chamber being shaped to provide concentrically arranged channels having their inner adjacent walis extending upwardly in spaced parallel relation for frictionally engaging and receiving the upper end of said can when said cover is placed thereon, a deodorizing insecticide in said channels, an absorbent pad disposed in the upper portion of said chamber overlying said chan- Name Date Arnot June 15, 1897 Callahan Apr. 15, 1924 with June 13, 1916 Egan July 6, 1915 Wright May 8,V 1900 FOREIGN PATENTS Country Date France Apr. 9, 1925
