UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM H. VRIGHT, OF SAN JOS, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE VACUUM CAN AND JAR COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CAN, JAR, OR' LIKE ARTICLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 649,030, dated May 8, 1900.
Application filed Januaryl, 1898. Serial N o. 668,529. (No model.)
To all wiz/0m it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. WRIGHT, acitizen of the United States of America, and a resident of San J ose, Santa Clara county, California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cans, Jars, or Like Articles, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement consists in the combination of a can or jar having a comparatively sharp or thin edge at the mouth and a cover having a cavity which is approximately V- shaped in cross-section opposite the comparatively sharp or thin edge of the can or jar and a packing material arranged in said cavity. Preferably the packing material Will consist of a piece of india-rubber or analogous substance which may by the comparatively sharp or thin edge of the can or jar be bent or folded and pressed into the said cavity of the cover.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a central vertical section of a can or jar and cover embodying my improvement, Fig. 2 is a similar vieW of the cover detached.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding-parts in both figures.
A designates the can or jar. It may be made of metal or other suitable material. As shown, it is of cylindric form; but this is not essential. It has at the mouth a comparatively sharp or thin edge a.
B designates the cover. While it may be made of any desirable form externally, it is essential that it should have internally a cavity b, approximately V-shaped in cross-section. In the present example of my improvement I have also shown my cavity as contracted to embrace the inner and outer sides of the mouth portion of the can or jar. In
the cavity a 'suitable packing material will be used, and this preferably Will consist of a ring C, of sheet soft rubber or analogous material. When so made, it Will be normally of a size to cross the cavity at about the base of the V-shaped portion. When the coveris fitted to the can or jar, the comparatively sharp or thin edge at the mouth of the latter will bend the packing at the middle and fold it so that one part will overlap the inside and the other the outside of the mouth portion of the can or jar. The comparatively sharp or thin edge of the can or jar will indent itself into the packing. y
Cans or jars embodying my improvement are admirably adapted for the so called vacuum process-for sealing the covers of cans or jars to the bodies of the same.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combinationof a receptacle having a sharp or thin edge at its mouth, a cover there-` VILLIAM H. lVRIGI-IT.
