Description

(No Model.)
L. H. THOMAS; ATTACHMENT FOR MUGILAGE BOTTLES. No. 599.461.
Patented Feb. 22, 1898.
WITNESSES.
UNITED SAIIES nrnwr rric,
LEVI II. THOMAS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ATTACHMENT FOR MUCILAGE BOTTLES.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,461, dated February 22, 1898.
Application filed Tune 20, 1896.
T0 aZZ whmn it may concern.-
Be it kn own that I, LEVI H. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Attachment for Mucilage-Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in an attachment for mucilage-bottles and other vessels containing liquids which are applied in use by means of a brush.
The object of my invention is to provide convenient means for protecting the mucilage or other liquid of the class stated from the atmosphere and also to remove, when it is desired to apply the liquid, the surplus liquid which is naturally taken up by the brush.
Referring to the drawings, in which like letters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a mucilage-bottle with my improved device, the brush being in place to close the opening, as hereinafter described. Fig. 2 is a top view of my device without the brush. Fig. 3 is a side View of the brush.
In the drawings, A represents a mucilagebottle; B, a funnel or tube of rubber or other suitable elastic material which is securely fastened at the mouth of the bottle by the metal cap 0, comprising a depending portion 0, resting upon the elastic stopper, and an outer flange which engages with the annular projecting rim of the bottle, so as to make an air-tight closure between the neck D of the bottle and the rubber tube 13.
E is the ferrule of the brush, havin g attached thereto in the usual way the bristles or hair Serial No 596,236. (No model.)
F, the shield G, and the handle II. The opening I in the rubber tube is of such size as to admit the lower part of the brush freely, but to tightly inclose the upper part of the ferrule when the brush is inserted, as the size of the ferrule increases from the lower end until it reaches the handle, as shown by Figs. 1 and 3. Thus when the brush is in position the ferrule E closes the opening I and forms a tight joint, protecting the contents from the atmosphere. WVhen the brush is withdrawn, the surplus mucilage is scraped from it by the edges of the opening I.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A closure for mucilage-bottles, comprising an elastic tube or funnel open at its lower end and provided at its upper end with an annular flange resting on the top edge of the bottle-neck, and a metallic cap or ring the inner depending portion of which bears upon the inner portion of the elastic funnel, while its outer edge is bent downwardly to engage the flange of the bottle-neck to form an air-tight joint therewith, in combination with a brush provided with a tapering ferrule, and a handle and a'disk or shield located between the ferrule and handle, and serving to close the upper end of the funnel.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 5th day of June, A. D. 1896.
LEVI H. THOMAS.
