Description

ug- 3, 1943 M. T. STEPHANSKO l 2,325,808
* GARBAGE CAN l Filed oct. 25, 1941 l f4 y f. 255 y i Ji ferred form of construction for carrying my in- ,stantial alignment or flush withthe outer face y vention into effect, this is capable of variationV ofthe flange 2U so that the cover may be placed in position or removed. In thisposition, the arms 29 are substantially parallel to each other across the corners of the plate forming the cross-arm 26 and this movement may be limited by engagement of the arms 29 with the pivot axis or the cotter pin 21. When the cover is in position so that theiiange 20 will seat upon the bottom side or flange'of Athe channel I1 and-fthe cover out-V wardly of the -ange 20 :also engages the'beaded edge of the top flange i8, an effective double seal will be provided to prevent the escape of odors from Within the can. Alsofinthis position, by turning the handle. 2| 90 degrees more or less,
Vthe cross-arm 2E will .also `be` correspondingly .turned to project the arms or bolts`29'through the slots 30 and outwardly in opposite directions :to engage the beaded channel l1 beneath and in contact With -the top flange I8 inV any position y aroundor circumferentiallycf the can and channel, thus securely fastening thecover in position and ,against .accidental displacement. d In this way, should the can be knocked or turned over on its side, yspilling and scattering .of vthe con-V tents vvill Ybe effectively prevented. Y'
It should also be noted yfrom thefdrawing thatl the' cr'ossarr'n is relativelyv close` to the bottom face of the cover but slightly spaced therefrom `due to the pivot bearing 23 which takes the form 'I 4of a boss 'or collar Vonthe bottom of the cover but Apermits the mounting of a foraminous or Yperforated receptaclev 3l in spaced relation there beneath lfor containing a disinfectant,'preferably vnapthalene for dispelling odors. InV order to mount this receptacle in spaced relationto the bottom of the cover to provide a space between the latter and the top of the receptacle for accommodating the cover fastening means, the receptacleV is 'provided' with a vperforated hinged f.
cover 32 having a spring catch 33 engagedover the beaded rim of the receptacle to hold thecover 32 closed.Y The cover 3,2 is provided with diametrically opposite parallelfslots 34 inits edge normal to a line connectingthe hinge and catch of the cover 32. The receptacle is hinged to the bottom face of the cover IS ofthe can I ll through one of the slots 3d as indicated at 35 in such a 'Y manner as to suspend the pivot of the'hinge 35 At the opposite slot 34, the receptacle3l` at'its'beadedV in spaced relation below the cover .19.
rim isdesigned to be engaged bya spring clamp 36 consisting of opposed spring. arms fastened to the bottom of the cover i9 on the diametrically opposite side ofthe pivot axis ofthe handle and depending therefrom to receive and resiliently hold the receptacle 3| in a suspended position at the center of the can so that the disinfectant fumes will deodorize and dispel the odors from the contents. At the'dsame time, the Yreceptacle maybe-readily disengaged from the spring clamp 36 to drop down onits pivot hinge 35 so that the cover 32 or lreceptacle 3| may be opened with the slots 34 clearing the spring clamp 36`and thel hinge 35 for insertion of the disinfecting ma,-
` terial and then closed andv engaged Y.with the spring clamp 36 -to hold it in the Y.position more particularly shown in Figs. vl and 3 of `the drawing.
From theforegoing, it will be seen Athat I prov vide a very desirable and leiiicient, construction for refuse or garbagecansV to the end that it may eiciently serve its `purposejand.facilitate handling thereof. i
While I have illustrated and described the preand Vmodification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction setvforth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modificationsr as come within the scope oi the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is new and desire to secureiby Letters Patent is: 'Y I" 1. The combination with a can body having a rim channel adjacent its top edge with a bottom portion and a top portion extending partially over the bottom portion, a cover having a depending V4'flange within the top portion and engaging the Y bottom portion to close and seal said channel and fasteningumeans carried by the cover and operable from the top thereof to engage said channel ,for securing saidV cover in position.
2. The combination with aV can body having a rim channel forming top and vbotto'rn flanges Aand open at lthe inside, a cover having aY depending cover 'to engage or` disengage beneath the top flange of thechannel.v
V3. A garbage or'refuse can including a body vhaving an outwardly projecting rim bead providing an internal groove with a beaded top portion and a bottom portion extending inwardly of the top portion and a cover having a depending surrounding flange spaced from the edge of the cover rto seat at its bottomedge against the top face ofthe bottom portion ofthe bead and the cover seating against the beaded top portion of the bead outwardly of the iiange. Y
. 4. A garbage or refusecan including a body having av circumferential channel opening inwardly with'a topflang'e terminating over and spaced from theinner edge of the bottom flange thereof and a vcover above the top of the body seating upon said top ange and having a depending cotinuo-us .a-nge spaced from the peripheral edge of theY cover torabut the inner edge Aof the top yilange and seating upon rthe bottom flange. d
5. A garbage or refuse can including a body having a circumferential channel opening inwardly with a top ange terminating overthe bottom flange thereof, an upwardly arched cover seating upon said topv flange and having a depending annular flange spaced fro-m the peripheral edge Yof the cover reenforced at its juncture with the cover toabut the inner edge of theV top flange and seating at its bottom edge upon the bottom flange, a handle having a vertical portion mounted to lturn centrally through the cover and depending therefrom, a cross-arm nxed to thedcpendingportion below the cover and arms pivotedto the cross-,arm at opposite sides of the pivot thereof and extending through slots in the depending flange to engage the channel in any position ofthe cover on the can body.
6. A can of the, class'. described including .a cylindrical body having an annular rim channel circumferentially of the top edge thereof, a cover over the'bodyY and-seating upon the rim of the Y body and channel and having an annular Adepending flangevat the inner side of the channel of the channel having a rolled inner edge en-k gaged by the cover outwardly of the flange and the flange having a rolled top edge engagingrthe i aforesaid rolled edge outwardly'ofA the Wallfof the body and the bottom edgeV of thexange seating j upon the bottom Wall of the channeladjacent the inner edge thereof, a handleV having' a portion pivoted centrally in the cover, a cross-arm xed to the central bolts pivoted to portion beneath the cover and the cross-arm and khaving the end portions thereof extending throughethe slots r whereby when the handle is turned-the Vbolts will .be projected into the channel or retracted therefrom.
body having a y at the inside and having a, top ange Withits inner edge terminating over. the vbottom flange in i spaced'relation to the wall of the can body and inner-edge of thebottom flange, a cover over andiV above the top edge of the body and having a rigid depending annular ange spaced from the 7. A can of the class described including a can 15 peripheral edge channel with its thereof to extend within the bottom edge seating upon the bottom of the channelysaid 'flange engaging the inner edge ofthe top of the channel and the cover outwardly ofthe ange engaging channel to form a dual seal.
