CAN STRUCTIJRE. i
Application sied December is, i924. serial No. 756,676.
To all when?, t may concern Be it known that I, Jnssii W. WI'I'I, a citizen of the'United States, and resident of Cincinnati, in the county of I-Iamilton and Sta-te of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can Structures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
This invention relates to improvements in can structures and more particularly to means for facilitating the attachment of a bail to the, device and the locking ofthe cover in place, one object of the invention being to provide simple and efficient means wherebythe cover of a garbage or ash can may be readily applied to the body of the can and, by a turning movement of the cover, to lock the latter against accidental displacement or removal by animals.
A further object is to so construct fastenn ing means for the cover of a receptacle, that portions of said means may be utilized in effecting connection -of a bail with the body portion y of the device.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as' hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing a receptacle embodying my improvements, with the cover in locked position.
Figure 2 is a similar view with in unlocked position.
Figure 3 is a sectional view.
Figure l is a view showing one of the parts to be secured to the body of the rcceptacle and a part for cooperation therewith and to be secured to the cover.
In the drawings,.I have illustrated the application of my improvement to al garbage the cover kcan or receptacle, the body portion of which is indicated at 1 and the cover at 2, the latter being vprovided with a peripheral flange 3, which encircles the upper portion of the body I, with a handle 4: to facilitate manipulation thereof. V y
Secured to the body 1 near the upper end thereof and at diametrically opposite positions, are plates 5, the upper portions of n which are elongated and provided with outand exact description of the in-l wardly p rojecting flanges 6 having stop lugs 7. The narrower depending portion 8 of the plate, 5 is bent so as to form an outward projection or ear 9, while the lower portion of the part 8y lies against the body of the receptacle and is secured thereto by rivet l0 or any ot upper potlie body other suitable fastening means.
lier suitable fastening means. The rtion yof each plate also lies against 1 and is secured by rivet 11 or The outward projections or ears 9 of the diametrically opposite plate. 5 aref provided with holes l2 of a bail To the.
hook sha which receive the hooked ends L3 flanged portion 3 of the cover 2,
ped catches l5 are securedV at diavmetrically opposite points. Each of these catches may consist of an elongated plate I6` provided with a Adepending L-shaped arm 17 so disposed that when the cover is place-d on the body l and turned, the members 17 will be moved relatively rto the plates 5 and the inwardly projecting portions I8 of said members flanges 6 17V will become disposed under the of saidl plates. It will loe readily 80 understood that turning movement of the cover will be limitedby engagement of the portions 1 8 ofthe members 17 with the stop lugs 7 and thus the cover will be prevented from being turned far enough in one dire'ction to accidentally disengage the cooperatng members.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire tol secureby Letters-Pate l. The
nt, is:
combination with a receptacle, and
a cover therefor', of a plate secured at its upper and lower ends to the receptacle and having its intermediate portion constructed.
to be engaged by and secure a bail, the rupper extremity of the plate being provided with a laterally projecting flange and a depending the flang at the margin thereof and having an arm dependin to extend past the edge of the flange on thc. lirstn'ientioned plate, the lower end of said arm projecting inwardly to engage under said flange and abut vthe stop lug.
2. The tionV and having a combination with the body por# cover of la receptacle, said covery peripheral flange to receive the upper portion of the body, of diametrically opposite pl ates secured to the body and eachv U3 comprised in a single integral structure haved to be moved into looked relation with the ing zitv its upper portion 'a horizontal outlenged portions of said plates When the 10 Wardly projecting flange and a, stop member, Cover is turned, the stop members *of said each of said plates 11a-ving an outward peryplates limiting the turning movement of said fol-ated projection forming abailsear, said COVCI- structure secured to the body portion above I n testimony whereof, I have signed this and below seid ear, and catches secured to speciication.
