Description

July 28, 1936. H HAMPE 2,049,373
RECEPTACLE Filed Sept. 5, 1954 INVENTOR 'mymra ATTORNEY WITNESS:
Patented July 28, 1936 more stares eater 2 Claims.
This invention relates to receptacles, and its general object is to provide'a closure or lid for a receptacle with a securing device that includes latching means for normally holding the lid in closed position and with locking means to hold the latching means against movement, so that casual actuation thereof is impossible, with the result the device is extremely useful for application t0 a refuse can lid to prevent animals from gaining access to the can, but of course is applicable to any type of receptacle, 7
A further object of the invention is to provide a securing device for the closure of a receptacle,
than .can be manually actuated in an easy and expeditious manner and the latching means includes handle means for the closure, so that the latter can be removed substantially simultaneously with theunlatching action.
A further object of the invention is to provide a securing device for the closure of a receptacle, that is simple, in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and extremely efiicient in operation and service.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the application of my securing device to a receptacle and its lid.
Figure 2 is a sectional View taken approximately on line 2-2 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary enlarged sectional view showing the latching means in fixed or locked position.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be noted that I have illustrated my securing device as being applied to a can and its lid that is generally used for refuse, but I want it understood that the device can be applied to any type of receptacle and lid capable of use therewith, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The receptacle or can as shown includes the usual body I of cylindrical formation and which is provided at intervals about the circumference thereof and adjacent to its upper end with elon by the reference numeral 5 are pivotally secured to the lid 3 intermediate their ends, through the instrumentality of substantially U-shaped brackets 6 that are riveted or otherwise secured to the lid as shown, with the levers pivotally mounted on pins 1 that bridge the apertured ears of the brackets.
The levers follow the shape of the lid for the major portion of their length and extend into depending portions 8 that terminate in inwardly directed ends or hooks 9 to be disposed in the recesses 2, as best shown in Figure 2, and are held accordingly by coil springs l0, there being a coil spring for each lever, and the coil springs have their lower convolutions received in sockets ll arranged in the lid, while the upper convolutions are received by bosses 82 that are formed with and depend from the levers as best shown in Figure 4.
The levers radiate from adjacent the center of the lid and terminate at their inner ends into upwardly directed arms l3 which are normally vertically disposed and act in the capacity as handles for moving the levers on their pivots against the coil springs H! for disposing the hooks 9 out of the recesses 2 so that the lid can be removed from the receptacle, as will be apparent. This action is accomplished by grasping the arms l3 and pressing them toward each other, with the result it will be noted that the latching means can be actuated to an unlatched position substantially simultaneously with the removal of the lid from the receptacle or can, as the arms l3 act in the capacity as handles for the lid.
While the lid is normally held in closed position through the instrumentality of the latching means above described, I also employ locking means for the latching means and this locking means in the form as shown includes cam means I l of substantially cup-shape configuration in that it is provided with a disk-shape base I5 that is rotatably mounted centrally of the lid by a headed pin l6 which extends through the base and lid as best, shown in Figure 4.
The cam means as shown is provided with three cam members I! that are arranged in ratchet formation and are formed with the base, with their upwardly inclined surfaces arranged in the path of lugs l8 that depend from the levers at the juncture of the arms l3 therewith The cam members as best shown in Figure 4. each terminate in a vertical shoulder at the highest point of their inclination and the lowest point of the cam members extend from th shoulders, as best shown in Figure 1. In view of the fact that there is a camjmemher for each lever, the latter are held in fixed or locked position when the lugs 18 contact the highest point of the inclined surfaces, but when it is desired to release the levers the cam l'memher is rotated on its pin l6 for disposing the lugs beyond the shoulders so that the latching means can be actuated ito nnlatched position,
there being ample space for that purpose, at the lowest point of the ca'mmed or inclined 'surTa'ces, therefore .it will beseen that the latching means 7 can be locked or held against casual movement,
or released, merely by rotating the cam means. .It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be "readily apparent. ,V
, I desire it to-be .understood.t-hat1-I may make changes i-n-t-he construction and in rthe com-bination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope oftheappended-claims.
What I claim is: I M
1. A ,seourin-g device for the closure :of a receptacle, comprising latching. means including levers pivotal-1y secured :to the closure, said receptacle including keeper means, hook' means formed on the levers and received in the keeper means when the latching means is in operative position to hold the closure on the receptacle, handles formed on the levers, and locking means to hold the latching meansin operative position,
said means comprising a cup shaped member which is centrally pivoted for finger rotation on the outer face of the closure and which has its peripheral and outstanding flange stepped to define wstraight vertical shoulders and inclined Walls between said shoulders and upon which walls the levers n'c-rmally rest.
2. A means for removably securing a flanged closure on the mouth of a receptacle, comprising 'saiseiiies of radiallydisposed levers spaced from but pivoted to the outer face of the cover and "having outer hook ends to engage with the remember which has its outstanding peripheral flange formed with outer edui-d-istantly spaced inc-lined walls and with straight connecting walls or shoulders between the highest and-lowest points of said inclined walls,,-and :the springs for the rlevers normally influencing the 'ln'gs on said lever-s against, the inclined walls'of the finger zoperated lock.
