. 2 Claims.
This invention relates to closure fastening devices, and its general object is to provide a device of that character for the covers, lids and tops of crates, coops, cases, boxes and like containers,
that not only detachably secures the closure on its container, but is capable of setting up a clamping action to hold the closure in binding engagement therewith, therefore accidental removal or displacement of the closure is practically impossible under all conditions, yet the fastening device can be easily actuated for securing or releasing the closure.
A further object is to provide a closure fastening device, that can be applied to any type of container such as an egg case, chicken coop, etc. and is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and extremely efficient in operation, use and service.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a view partly in section, illustrating my fastening devices applied to an egg case.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary front View.
Figure 3 is a sectional view illustrating an intermediate position of the fastening device.
Figure 4 is a similar view with the fastening device in released position.
Figure 5 is a detail view of the attaching plate.
Figure 6 is a perspective fragmentary view illustrating one end of the latching bar.
Figure '7 is a detail view of the latching bar lever.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be noted that I have illustrated my fastening devices as being applied to an egg case that includes a body I having side walls 2 and a closure in the form of a lid 3 that is provided with holding strips i secured to and depending from the ends thereof. The lid is removable as will be apparent, but is secured in closed position through the instrumentality of my fastening devices, as clearly shown in Figure 1.
In the present instance, the lid is entirely removable from the body of the container and in view of that feature two of my fastening devices are necessary but the lid may have one edge hingedly secured to the container, and in that event only one fastening device will be required.
My fastening device includes an attaching plate 5 which as best shown in Figure 5 is substantially H -shaped in configuration in that it includes arms having a piece 6 bridging the same, and the arms are provided with openings for the purpose of receiving suitable securing means such as screws, for securing the plates to the side walls of the case or container, as shown in Figure 1. The upper ends of the arms of the attaching plate are curved upon themselves in hook formation as at I, and the securing means of the upper openings of the arms likewise secure ears 8 to the arms, that have their upper ends curved for cooperation with the curved portions of the arms to provide eyes disposed in registration with respect to each other.
Loosely mounted in the eyes are trunnions 9 that extend from the opposite sides of the upper end of the latching bar lever l0, which has a flattened outer end portion I I to provide a convenient finger gripping means as will be apparent upon inspection of Figure '7.
The upper end portion of the latching bar lever is slotted as at l2 to receive the lower end of the latching bar [3, and the lower end has a stud l4 extending therethrough, with its extending ends pivotally mounted in openings IS in the bifurcated portions provided by the slot l2. The opposite or upper end of the latching bar is reduced to provide a hook I6.
In the form as shown, it will be noted that each of the holding strips have secured thereto eyelets N that depend therefrom for disposal in the path of the hooks I6 of the latching bars I3, and the latching bars are guided in their movement by substantially U-shaped members It that are secured to the side walls 2 and through which extend the bars.
The side walls in the form as shown have recesses l 9 and 20 therein, and the recesses I9 provide pockets to receive the hooked upper end portions of the latching bars when the latter are released from the eyelets, while the recesses 20 provide pockets for the lower portions of the levers J0 when the fasteners are in operative position.
The trunnions 9 are preferably oval shaped in cross section and of less diameter than that of the eyes to provide a loose connection therewith, to allow the hooks I6 to drop below the openings in the eyelets ll, when the hooks are disconnected therefrom, as shown in Figure 4, yet the trunnions bear against the eyes or bearings of the attaching means, for drawing the lid or closure in binding engagement with the upper end of the body when the hooks 16 are in the eyelets or keeper means I1, and when the lever I0 is moved downwardly to the positions, as best shown in Figures 1 and 2. It will be obvious that when the fasteners are in the position of the last mentioned figures, the lid is held in closed position and against accidental removal or displacement.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a fastening device for the closure of a container, attaching means including bearing eyes and secured to the body of the container, a hand operated lever having a slotted end, trunnions oval shaped in cross section extending laterally from the slotted end and loosely mounted in the bearing eyes, a latching bar pivoted in the slotted end and having a hooked free end removably received in keeper means secured to the closure for drawing the latter in closed position, and said body being recessed to provide pockets to receive the lever and the latching bar. 2. In a closure fastening device, an attaching plate having curved ends, curved means coopcrating with the curved ends to provide bearings, a lever having a flattened end providing a handle and a slotted opposite end, trunnions extending laterally from the slotted end and loosely mounted in the bearings, a latching bar having one end extending into the slot and the latter having openings in the Walls thereof. a pin extending through the latching bar and mounted in the openings for pivotally securing the latching bar to the lever, a hooked free end for the latching bar and removably received in keeper means therefor and secured to the closure, and a U-shaped member with the latching bar extending therethrough to be guided thereby.
