Patented Feb. 10, 1931 7 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GARBAGE-Cm CONTAINER Application filed November 28, 1928. Serial No. 322,807.
The present invention relates to garbage .can containers and particularly to such containers as are adapted to be secured to a fence, or other such defining wall, and in B which the arrangement is such that access may be had to the interior of the container from both sides of the fence or wall.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved container of this character.
A further object is to provide such a container, with parts so coordinated and related, that the can may be attended from both sides of the'fence with a minimum of exertion on the part of the attendants.
A further object is to provide a device of this character durable and strong and which may be manufactured at a small cost.
' A still further object of the invention is to rovide a container which, when closed, wil be effectively sealed against the escape of odors and against the ingress of insects, rodents and the like.
The garbage can container, constituting my invention and in which the above objects are accomplished, comprises an enclosure, preferably of sheet metal, which may be attached to one side of a fence to cover an opening formed therein for removal and re lacement of a garbage can from the alle si e of the fence and an open top throng which the garbage can may e removed from the container on the inside of the fence. The open top is preferably closed by a double and secondary covers, the former being designed to permit removal of the can and the latter to permit insertion of garbage refuse and the like with the primary cover remaining closed.
urther facilities, in the operation and'attending of the above construction, comprise the addition of accessories so that the seconda cover may be raised by an attendant wlthout the use of the hands and the arrangement of a closure for the opening in the fence in such a manner that the attendant on the alley side may have ready and non-laborious access to the garbage can.
may be made of sheet metal-and the concover, which may be known as the primary 1 Fi ure 5 is a detail fragmenta The closure for the opening in the fencealterations thereof except the cutting of a 5 hole in the fence and the mounting of a suitable pulle above the o ening, over which a cable may 0 trained i desired to facilitate opening this closure.
Also the cover lids will be so constructed t as to prevent the escape of odors from the can by providing suitable flanges thereon which embrace respectively the upper end of the can and a lip ridge around the opening in the primary cover; i
A detail of the invention of considerable importance is the construction of the secondary cover to facilitate its assembly with a lever arm by which it may be raised and lowered. This feature constitutes a notch in the secondary cover adapted to receive a pin which is removably mounted in the arm and a recess adjacent the arm to provide space for insertion of the in into an aperture in the arm, in assembllng the parts.
The accompanying drawings represent an embodiment of the princi les of my invention together with a modi cation of one feature thereof. In these drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the can container made in accordance with present invention. 1
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the same, in these two views the fence to which the container is attached is shown fragmentarily.
Figure 3 is a top plane view of the same.
Figure 4 is a vertical section through the fence and through the container on a central line as indicated by the numerals 44 in Fig ure 3.
view showing the construction of a part 0 the secondary cover and illustrating the manner of attaching the same to the o erating lever rod.
Figure 6 is a further etail view illustrative of the same feature as that shown in Figure 5.
Figure 7 illustrates a device similar to that shown in Figures 1 to 6 inclusive but illustrates the same as equipped with-a side cloand adaptaplan view of the can as attached to a fence.
Referring to the drawings in detail by reference numerals, designates a fence to which the container 11 is attached by means of flanges 12. The fence is provided with an opening registering with the open side of the container. 1
The lower end of the container is closed by a bottom wall 15 while the upper end is open and provided with a closure designated as a whole by the reference numeral 16. i
The closure 16 is supported by a bar 17 attached to the sidewalls of the container as by rivets or bolts as indicated at 17a. Flanges 18 and 19 are preferably formed thereon extending respectively upwardly and downwardly from the bar and a primary cover 20 hingedly secured to the bar 17 as by the pivotally connected ears 21 and 22 formed respectively upon the bar 17 and the cover 20.
These ears are made to project at opposite inclinations and to have their extremities overlapping as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings and are adapted to be secured together in pairs by bolts 23 extendin through aligned apertures in the ears and held against displacement by nuts 24.
he primary cover is provided marginally with a groove 25 formed by two downwardly rojecting ribs 26 and 27 ,the former being designed to lie exteriorly of the walls of the container and the other to lie within said walls, the inner flange 27 being of greater extent than the outer flange and being ada ted to sit fairly snugly against the inner we 1 of the container. This arrangement provides an effective seal against escape of odors from the can and the ingress of flies and etc, thereto. The extent of the read removal of the garbage can placed within the container.
The primary cover is provided with a central opening 28 which is surrounded. on the upper surface of the cover with an annular rib 29 and on its underside with a downwardly directed funnel like flange 30- so constructed that it will direct garbage or the like deposited therein into can neath. Such a can is shown in Figure 4 and designated by the numeral 31.
The opening 28 of the rimary cover is normally closed by a secon ary cover 32 hinged to the primary cover in a manner which will be hereinafter described and provided with a marginal flange 33 extending downwardly and adapted to snugly encircle the rib 29 referred to above. The hinge construction by which the secondary cover is secured to the on the fence bore through which the rod 37 extends primary cover permitsplaced therebe-x primary cover comprises ears 34 formed on the primary cover and an extension 35 extending rearwardly from the secondaryvcover and preferably formed'integral therewith and with a bore 36 through which a rod 37 constituting a part of a lever arm ma be passed. This lever arm is extended beyon the side of the primary cover and is formed at its projecting end with a crank arm 38.
The secondary cover 32 issecured to this rod for rotation therewith by means of a pin 39 inserted through an aperture 40 in the rod and resting in a notch 41 formed in the extension 35; this notch being offset from and in communication witha second notch 42 opening in the bottom side of the extenv sion 35. y
The arrangement of these notches to th;
1s 0 considerable importance in the assembly of the parts which is as follows. The rod 37 is pro ected through the apertures in.the ears 34 and through the bore in the extension 35 after the same have been brought into ali ment. But before the rod has been extend d d to its limit at which the shoulder 37a formed thereon will abut against the adjacent ear 34, and while the aperture 40 is lyin in the larger notch 42, the pin 39 is inserted into the aperture 40. The rod is then extended to its full limit and the where it will be held by the nut-I43 which is then threaded to the end of the rod 37 as shown in Fi re 3. By this construction the pin 39 Willa prevented from dislodgment from the aperture 40 and the rod 37 and will afford connection by which the seconda cover 32 is forced to turn with the rotation of the rod 37.
By this arrangement the assembly of the secondary cover with the primary cover is facilitated and the accidental disconnection of these two parts one from the other is revented, while the turning of the secon cover with the rod 37 is insured.
It frequently happens, when the housewife carries the garbage to the garbage can, that both hands are occupied and it is ordinarily necessary for her to set the vessel down whic she is carrying in order to lift the cover'prior to depositing the garbage in the can 31. 'The necessity for this I have overcome b pivotally attaching a foot treadle or level on the lower end of the container. Such a treadle is designated at 44 and is connected with the arm 38 through the link 45. This treadle is preferably passed through a slot 46 formed on 4 one of the supporting legs 57 of the container to revent treadle from becoming distorted or disengaged from the container.
The opening in the fence may be closed by a suitable slide door 47 arranged in suitable slideways 48 formed in and extending vertically with respect to the container and this door may have attached thereto a cable 49 ary passing over a pulley 50 and having a suitable handle 51 at its end which may be grasped by the garbage collector to raise the door 47. The door may be held raised in a This assures a tight closing of this side of the can. It will be seen that my can as constructed is of a most sanitary character and that with the various closures as arranged will effectively prevent the escape of fumes from the garbage and will prevent the access of flies to the garbage; which is not only unsightly but also quite unsanitar An alternate construction 0 closure for the fence is illustrated in Figures 7 8 and 9 of the drawings in which the closure 47?) is constructed to slide sideways instead of vertically as in the previous case. A handle 53 is provided on this closure which is constructed to slide on tracks 54 and 56 extending lat- 1111 one erally from the rear of the casing said casat the top and one at the bottom 0 The track 54 is a continuation of the flange 18, and the closure 47?) is provided with a bent over flange 55b slidable on the flange 18 and its continuation in track 54 at the upper end and a flange 57 which is continued in the track 56 at the lower end and secured to the lower edge of the container. The tracks 54 and 56 are of course substantially in the same vertical plane and the left side of the container 11a viewed from the front, is provided rearwardly with a laterally projecting and vertically extending flange or rib 58 and the closure is provided with a lapped over flange 59 providing a groove adapted to receive this rib 58 therein when the closure is in closed position. The other side of the closure is snugly received in a groove 60 formed at the other side of the casing. In this manner the closure is made substantially proof against the escape of odors and against the ingress of flies, gnats, rodents and the like. This type of device is particularly adapted to use with low fences where the construction shown in Figures 1 to 6 inclusive would be out of the question.
In this modification of the device the bar 17 is attached to the fence by means of a bracket 61 placed on the end thereof at the side of the container toward the tracks 54 and 56. The bracket 61 is formed so as to stradthe container and the attendant from the alley side collects the same. In doing so, he slides the closure 47b to the side and removes the can 31, emptying the same and closing the door 476.
The device in either construction is fly proof, rodent proof and substantially odor proof.
The present embodiments as shown in the drawings are to be considered as merely illustrative ofthe principles of my invention and I do not wish to be limited in the scope and a plication of these principles except as I shal be limited by the-scope of the appended claims.
IVhat I claim is: r
1. In connection with a garbage can a closure therefor, a rod connected to the closure, said closure having a notch formed eccentrically therein, and a pin extending from the rod and fitting snugly in said notch,
said cover havin a recess communicating with the notch and of the cover.
2.
