This invention relates to receptacle covers or closures provided with cover glasses.
More particularly the invention has to doy with an improved construction in a closure of the type named by which a broken cover glass may be easily and quickly replaced:
' An object of our invention is the provisionv of a cover or closure of two parts adapted to telescope one into the other, said parts being identical in form and size, the glass being held between the two.
Another object lies in providing two iden tical rings which together form a closure for a receptacle, the same being telescoped and adapted to hold between them the cover` glass, said rings being separable forthe purremovable der to make our invention fully understood.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a portion of a receptacle showing the cover or closure of our invention applied thereto. Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical section of portions of the lid or cover and the receptacle `to which the same is applied. Figure 3 shows portions of two rings in perspective. Figure i is a section of parts of the two rings shown in the earlier figures and means for securing them relatively, and Figure 5 shows in perspective parts of the receptacle and our invention applied thereto.
The body of the receptacle is denoted at 1.
A cover is provided for said receptacle identified in general by the character 2. It has the form of a ring and includes a flange 3 to engage over the receptacles top and, within the central opening thereof the ring has an inwardly extending flange or lip 4 terminating an inner depending wall 5. Thus formed the cover has the central opening 6, said cover constituting what may be termed a primary closure for the receptacle. It is re-f' movable and receives asecondary cover or y closure `which may preferably be hinged thereto.V This said secondary closure, therefore, is that portion through which the goods in the receptacle may be inspected, being provided with a cover-glass and maybe raised Serial No. 505,847.
for dispensing the goods protected thereby.Y
Such secondary closure comprises a pair of rings of identical form and size, each comprising in this instance a cylindrically formed wall portion 7 8 and a flange portion 9, 10, A
respectively, lying in planes at right angles to said wall port-ions as best shown in Figures 2 and 3, and the said cylindrically formed walls may terminate each in an outwardly turned flange 11 at its lower free edge.
A glass cover-plate is represented at 12 and is placed within the upper of the two rings, covering the central opening 13 there'- of, and when so placed is followed by the ring 8, the margin of the glass being thus enclosed between the two flanges 9, 10. Holes 14 are provided in the walls 7, 8 in register for the reception of. easily removable meinbers Liwhich, for example, may correspond to the well known paper fastener, or like'l device, by which the rings may be maintained in positive connected relation.
Although the drawing indicates the rings 7-9 and 8-10 as being of heavy gauge for purposes of better showing yet, as is well' lrnown, the tin from which metal ware is constructed is really of quite light gauge 4and, therefore, although the said rings are identical in size one may be telescoped into the other, the flange 7 of the outer ring readily giving as the innerring is inserted to enclose the cover-glass 12, Figures 2 and 5, the flanges 9, 10 being spaced in accordance with the thickness of said glass.
The flange 11 of the inner ring 8-10 finds l any abutment upon the flange 4 of the wall 5 of the primary closure-ring 2, and a convenient grip 16 may be secured to the flange 9, while a hinge 16 may be fixed to the latter and to said primary closure, see Figure 1, in
addition to which there 'may be erected on the said primary closurea stop 17 to support the lid or cover 7, 8, 12 and when raised during dispensing periods.
- The rings 7, 8 are identical as already stated being made from the same set of dies thus saving in cost of manufacture besides providing for an exceedingly snug fit, in addition to which the rings are thus provided with the same type and width of flanges 9, 10 1a.
