' COVER FOR ASE-CANS.
memes.
To aZZ whom z't'may concern: I Y
' Be it known that 1, CHARLES S. WALDO, Jr., citizen of the United States, and resident of Brookline, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Covers for Ash-Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to covers for ash cans and similar receptacles, and its object is to provide a novel and improved cover, suitable for use on any usual form of ash can, to keep the can tightly closed except. when materials are being put in,'and more v i above the top of the can, so that the lid does not swing down into the can when opened,
thus leaving the entire space in the can free to receive the materials to the very top.
These and other features will be hereina after more fully described and particularly I pointed out in the claims. r
In, he accompanying drawings which illustrate one embodiment of the invention,-Figure 1 is a vertical section showing a cover containing the invention, supported on the top of a can, with the lid in open poj sition; Fig. 2 'is a plan view of said cover;
, an'ash can, or similar receptacle, of ordi- I, cover, and is provided with a rectangular. opening Z). Mounted on the platform.' B is and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view in vertical section showing the dust proof cushion and the cover' in closed position.
Referring to the drawings, A. represents nary form.
- The cover comprises a base or platform B, circular in form and preferably provided with a downwardly extending marginal flange b. The platform B rests on the top of the can after the manner of an ordinary anwrec'tangularcasing G, three of the side wallsof whichiise'fr'om the edges of the opening I), so that a clear passage through the cover is provided, unobstructed by projecting ledges which might catch and accumulate ashes or other material,-while' the fourth side wall of the casing rises from a Specification of Letters latent.

leaving a shelf 6 extending part way across the botom of the casing. An'opening o is provided in the top of the casing 0, surrounded by a rim or flange which constitutes a seat for the lid when closed.
- position removed from said opening I), thus D is a downwardly swinging lid, hinged in the upper part of the casing G by means of pmtles d, which extend through holes inthe side walls of the casing. Springs jof-" any approved type yieldingly hold the' lidf closed over the opening 0. A cushion--{d'-.
of felt or other suitable yielding materiall'issecured about the margin of the lid D, and forms a dust proof seal between the lid and the margin of the opening 0.
The casing C 's of such height above the base or platform B that the lid D will not swing downward into the ash space within the can A, but substantially the-whole range .of movement of the lid will be within the casing C. Thus the'can may be filled to' its top without interfering with the operation of the lid.
The part of the platform which extends into the casing and forms the shelf?) serves as a stop to limit the downward movement of the lid and to hold it in an inclined position, as shown, so that it serves as an inclined chute for the ashes being inserted. In that position the lidcovers the shelf 6 and prevents any of the ashes from lodging thereon.
The operation is as follows: It will be.
understood that the lid is normally held closed by the springs. When ashes or the like are to be deposited in the can A, they are inserted through the opening 0 by means of a shovel or other suitable implement. The user presses the lid downward with the shovel and permits the ashes to slide off, or
the'ashes may be deposited directly on the lid which, will swing downward under their weight. in either case the ashes will pass through the casing C and the opening I) in the platform, which is surrounded and inclosed by the casing, and the lid D will immediately swingupward again into closed position, preventing the escape of dust as the ashes fall into thecan.
The' whole structure is preferably made of sheet metal, although that is not essen tial; and it may be made in sizes to conform to'the standard sizes of ash cans, although the laterally extending platform B admits of using the cover on cans of any circumlie . ference between that of the flange b, and a circle c'ircumscribing the opening 6'. A
. [Strip ofvfelt b -secured to the under margin 7 j of theplatform B, constitutes a dust proof jcus'hion between the platform and the top of the'can A to prevent the escape of dust therebe'tween when the cover is-inplace.
I claim:'
