commons.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN PINKNEY'DAR- NALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county. of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements: in Commodes; and I do declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains .to make and use the same. i .This invention relates to new and useful improvements in commodes, and the primary object of theinvention is to provide a device of this-character which will be absolutely odorless, and which is furthermore provided with disinfecting means carried in the same. I Y
Another object of the invention is to provide a commode of this character having a lower compartment, and an upper compartment disposed above the same and carrying.
disinfecting material which is adapted to drop into the lower compartment upon movement of the commode. I
Still another object of the invention is to provide adevice of this. character with a new and improved type of valve which closes a communicating funnel-shaped member between the top of. the commode and the lower compartment, and which is operable from the outside of the commode.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is easily and simply constructed, inexpensive to manufacturaand one which will be'very efficient in operation.
With these and numerous other objects in view, my invention consists of the novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts which will be herein referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
. In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a central vertical section through the commode; and' Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. 1
In describing my invention I shall refer to-the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views. Thenumeral l designates my new and improved commode which is preferably formed of some earthenware material, although if desired it may be formed of metal, etc. The commode'is'provided with a horizontally exv Specification of Letters Patent. tending partition 2 extending across the same adjacent its top.=andv provided with a plurality, of openings 3 therethrough;
This partition 2 will divide the commode into two compartments, the .lowerreceiving compartment and the upper disinfectant holding compartment 5. lower compartments 5 and 4t are provided with spouts 6 and 7 which have secured on their outer ends removable closures, as
shown at 8. 1
The perforated partition 2 .is provided with a central opening 9, and disposed above this partition, andextending inwardly from the upper edge of the commode is a-fiange 10. Connecting theinner edge of the'flange The upper and with the partition, in such a manner that the lower surface ofthe partition as shown at 12,.and the same has extending therefrom at diametrically opposite points, arcuate ribs 13that extend to the wall of the commode. 1
These: ribs 13 are adapted toform guides in a'manner to be hereinafter more fully described. ...The commode may be provided with the ordinary type of bail handle as shown at 14 so that the same may be easily moved from place-to place. The spout 6 that communicates with the upper compart ment is used to-pour chlorid of lime or any other disinfecting material therein and the same may be held until upon movement of the commode a certain amount will drop down; through the perforations in the partition 2 into the lower compartment 4. The spout 7v islused for emptying the lower compartment.
-T=his commode is also provided with a valve mechanism which covers the lower contracted end of the funnel-shaped member 11 and which is operable outside of the.
same. By this means it is not necessary to provide the commode with a separatecover,
The valve which is designated by the numeral 15 comprises a flat plate slightly larger than the lower end of the funnelshaped member, and-adapted to engage,
when in closed position, the lower projecting 17, and itsother end extending upwardly 50 1 tions in the partition intowtie-lower comthrough the partition 2 and the flange 10,
While the projecting portion" 18 of the same has secured thereto an operating knob 19..
This knob 19 is rigidly secured to the free end of the rod so that upon rotation of the knob'the'rod will. also be turned in either so that it may easily turn,
To hold the-plate 15 tight-lyagainst the bottom. of the-funnel! at'12, I have provlded the operating knob 19 with spring means which compriseacoiled spring 20 positioned between the notched :bottom ofsaid knob and the'topof the flange. Thelowerend ofthis coiled spring rests on a washer 21 positioned: inthe bottom of: the i flange, While its upper end is positioned against the bottom 'of the knob. This spring-iwill eX- ert-a contant upward pressure against the knob and consequentlyon the operating rod 16, whereupon the plate 15 'will, when 0- sitioned' over the opening, be i tightlyheld against the projecting end 12 0f the funnel 11.: 1
In operation, it will be-obviousthatthe upperv compartment 5 I may be readily filled with any desired kind of disinfectant through the spout 6, 'and'when: in 1 normal position the valve plate'lowill cover theopening in the bottom ofthez-funneh' as clearly shown in Fig; 2 of the drawings,- in full lines.
WVhen in use, the plate'l5i'is moved-laterally from beneath the opening by grasping the knob 19 and rotating; thesame, where' uponthe valve plate will slide along: one of the guide ribs 13 on'the lower 'surface of thepartition. The'knob 19 is pushed down a short distance before rotatingso'as-to dis+ engage the plate from the bottom of the-funnel. After use, the valve is moved back into place, and'this will close the openingthrough the top of the commode and make the de* vice absolutelyodorless. Byxthis-means it will be unnecessary to provide a separate cover for :the device. Upon movement of the receptacle, a certain amount of the disi'ns fectant will drop; down throu hthe perforap'artment;
From the foregoing description of the construction and operation of my new and improved commode,'the manner of applying the same to use and the-operation thereof willbe readily understood and it-will beseen that I have provided a simple and efficient means for carrying out the objects of the invention.
I claim v j I 1. A commodeofthe class described hav inga horizontally extending; perforated par- 2;" A commode of the class described hav- I ing ahorizontally extending perforated partition: therein forming upper and lower oom:- partments inzthe .same,.-said partition having an; openingjztherethrough, a. funnel-shaped member having. its: lower end surrounding saidopening and its-:upper end connected with the upper edge of'the upper :compart: ment, a valve adaptedto'close the lower end of said funnel-shaped member, an operating stem 'for said valve-extending through the commode, and springxmeans on the project ingend of said stem to hold the'ivalve closed when: disposed: ove iSiLlCl opening.
3; A commode of the class :described having a horizontally extending perforatedipartitionuadjacentvits upper end, said partition having-:a centrallydisposedopening there through, an inwardly projecting flange on the upper edge of said commode, a funnelshaped; member havingits lower end surrounding the openingin the partition and the upper end connected. with the flange, a plate disposed beneath said opening in the partition, an angular operating rod connected with said plate and extending through the flange; at thetopiof lsaid commode, and a springqoressed operating knob on the=-proecting en'd ofwsaid .rod to hold 'the' plate against the bottom of the parititioni Q. A commodeof the class described havinga'horizontal'ly extending. perforated partition :adjacent its upper end, said partition having; an opening therethrough, an inwardly projecting flangeolr the upper edge of said commode, 1a funnehshaped member havingfiits lower-end surrounding the open ing intheparti-tion andits upper end connected with the flange, arcuateguiddribs on the low-er surface of said partition extending from opposi-tesides of i the opening, a plate disposedbeneath-said partition and adapted -to cover theopening, and springpressed operatingmeansto-slide the plate from beneath theopeningwalong one of theguide ribs.
In testimony whereof Ihavehereunto set my hand in'thefpresence of two subscribing witnesses.
