TE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. BROWNyOF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
GABBAG'E CAN.
To all whom, it may concern.
"Be it known that I, JOHN H. BROWN, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Springfield, in the'county of I-Iampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Garbage-Cans, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in garbage containing and disinfecting ap ratus of a kind in which the garbage, 0 al or other refuse is contained in an upwardly open can which is inclosed within a larger can having a cover therefor,-so that there is an annular Space between the walls of the outer and inner cans as well as a s ace between'the bottoms of the two cans, w nch latter space is insured by the supporting of the inner can with its bottom suitably above that of the outer can.
The objects of the invention are to provide means located under the bottom of the inner can for containing a disinfectant, the
fumes, vapors or gasesof which are free for dissemination upwardly around the inn'ercan and have entrance into the latter-at the" open top thereof, such disinfectant'container preferably having means for the detachable confinement thereof centrally and upon the bottom of the outer can.
Other objects of the invention are attained in and by the subject matter thereof which is described in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and is set forth in the claims.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved garbage containing and disinfecting apparatus. Fig. 2 is a plan view, on a smaller scale, bof the same,
the cover for the outer can eing understood as removed. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view, also on the smaller scale, as taken on line 3-3, Fig. 1, or as would be seen with the inner can removed.
In the drawings, A represents an outer can provided with a bail or carrying handle a and provided with a tightly closing cover B.
0 represents another can of smaller diameter than the one A, within the latter and having an open top. The can C is provided with a bail 0r handle b for lifting it with the accumulated garbage therein, out from the larger can and for convenience in carrying it.
The garbage containing can C has feet Specification 0! Letters Patent.
"outwardly extends for detachable engagement under the in- Patented Dec.'7, 1915.
Application filed March 29,1915. Serial No. 17,701.
(Z (i whereby it is supported with its bottom above the bottom of the outer can whereby there is a space between the bottoms of the two cans in addition to the annular space between the upright walls of the cans.
The outer can A has concentrically of its bottom'opposed and spaced approximately semi-circular plates D I), the outer marginal portions f of which rest on and are riveter or otherwise secured to the can bottom, while their intermediate portions 7 are upwardly bent and their inner marginal arc siaped portions It are turned parallel with and in separation from the bottom of the can A.
J represents a receptacle for a disinfectant, supported and detachably confined on the bottom of the outer can, under the inner can, spaced from the bottom of the inner can, and havin at its bottom oppositely d flat members i adapted wardly turned or ofiset marginal portions of said opposed lates D D. The rece itacle for the disin ectant is, therefore, always held in its proper place centrally in relation to the cans, and yet when desired, it is readily removable by the action of partially rotating it so that-its fiat outwardly proi'ecting members 11-2 are alined with the ength of the space is between the opposed lates D D, whereupon the receptacle is ree and may be lifted out of the can,the restoration of the receptacle to and in its confined position being accomplished by a reversal of the described operation.
As the garbage containing inner can is to be removed and replaced in the covered can with comparative frequency, and inasmuch as it is desirable that the inner can shall be concentric within the inclosing can, the inner can is provided with centralizing means consistin of outwardly extending members G (i, practicall composed of thin fiat metal, riveted or 0t ierwise secured at different points around the can wall and havmg portions m downwardly inclined from upper portions thereof to their junction with the can wall. These centralizing members G having the outwardly bent form, as clearly shown in Fi 1, may be secured on the sides of the can at any suitable oint in the hei ht thereof by rivets or sol ering.
y having means for centralizing the inner can in its entrance into the outer one and having means for the confinement of the disinfectant receptacle centrally within 1 and at the bottom of the outer can, there can be no engagement, as would be undesirable, of the feet of the can with the disinfectant receptacle; and, moreover, by having such receptacle made with a top I- nearly closing it, but having a central opening therein, in case the can should receive a sudden jar the liquid disinfectant cannot be spilled from its container.
The garbage containing and disinfecting apparatus described and shown is one which manifestly is of simple and inexpensive construction, and while, therefore, devoid of complicated features and devices is serviceable and ellicient for its intended use.
I claim:
1. A garbage containing and disinfecting apparatus consisting of a can having a cover therefor, and having concentrically of its bottom opposed and spaced approximately semiwircular plates, the c.uter marginal portions of which rest on and are secured to the can bottom while their intermediate portions are upwardly bent and their inner marginal are shaped )ortions turned parallel with the bottom of the can, another can of smaller diameter than the first can, within such can, open at its to a, and having means for sup )orting it with its bottom above that of the hrst can whereby there is a space between the bottoms of the two cans in addition to an annular space between the upright walls of the cans, and an upwardly open receptacle for disinfectant supported on the bottom of the outer can, under the inner can, having the top thereof s need from the bottom of the inner can, iiilt having at its bottom, oppositely extended flat members adapted for detachable engiwement under the inwardly turned margmiil portions of said opposed plates.
.2. A garbage containing and disinfecting apparatus consisting of a can having a. cover therefor, another can of smaller diameter than the first can, within such can, open at Copies of this patent may be obtained for its top, having means for supporting it with its bottom above that of the first can whereby there is a space between the bottoms of the two cans in addition to an annular space between the upright. walls of the cans, and having, located at different points around its wall, outwardly extending centralizing members which, from upper portions thereof, are downwardly inclined to their junction with the can wall, and an upwardly openreceptacle for disinfectant sup orted on the bottom of the outer can un er the inner can, and having the top thereof spaced from the bottom of the inner can.
3. A garbage containing and disinfecting apparatus consisting of a can having a cover therefor, and having concentrically of its bottom opposed and spaced approximately semicircular )lates, the outer marginal portions of which rest on and are secured to the can bottom while their intermediate portions are upwardly bent and their inner mar inal a re shaped portions turned parallel wit 1 the bottom of the can another can of smaller diameter than the list can, within such can, open at its top, having feet for supporting it with its bottom above that of the first can whereby there is a space between the bottoms of the two cans in addition to an annular space between the upright walls of the cans, and havin outward y extending members for centra izing it in the outer can,
and an upwardly open receptacle for disinfectant supported on the bottom of the outer can under the inner can, havin the top thereof s mced from the bottom of t 1e inner can, and having at its bottom, oppositely extending ilat members adapted for detachable engagement under the inwardly turned marginal iortions of said opposed plates.
