GARBAGE REGEPTAGLE- No. 508,325. Patented Nov. 7, 1893.
UNITED STATES vPATENT OFFICE.
DAVID MARK LEWIS, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF OOLMBIA.
GARBAGERECEPTACLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,325, dated November 7, 1893.
Application filed March 7, 1893. Serial No. 465,017. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID MARK LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Receptacles; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relatesto improvements in garbage boxes for containing kitchen refuse, and its object is to provide a novel construction of the same in which a hinged spring actuated valve is employed for opening and closing theopening through which the garbage is inserted, said valve having upon its inner or under side a receptacle for containing disin fecting material which is discharged through a perforated bottom into the receptacle or box as the valve is actuated.
The invention consistsmin the novell construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a garbage box constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar section taken at a right angle to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation partly broken away. Fig. lis a bottom view of the top of the receptacle.
In the said drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates a cylindrical box or receptacle, provided with a removable conical top 2. This cover is provided with a hopper 4 provided with a hinged lid or cover 5. Hinged or pivoted to the lower end of the hopper which projects a short distance below the top 2, is a valve 6, one end of the shaft or journal of which projects through the side of the top and is provided with a crank or handle 7. .Iournaled in bearings 8,-secured to the inside of the top 2 is a coiled spring 10, the ends of which project downwardly and are secured to a rod 12, bearing upon the valve. At its center the spring is bent outwardly forming an arm vbearing against the said top. The lower side of the valve is provided with depending walls 13 forming a rectangular receptacle 14, closed by a removable perforated bottom 15. This bottom consists of a curved metallic plate formed with a number of holes 16, and is provided with side flanges 17 and shoulders 18, and rend flanges 19 and shoulders 20, which engage with the edges of the walls 13. A spring" catch 2l is provided for holding the bottom in place.
The operation is as follows: lTo insert the disinfecting material in the receptacle 14, top 2 is removed and inverted and the bottom 15 of the receptacle removed. After placing the material in the receptacle the bottom is placed in position, the flanges 17 engaging with the inner sides of the lower ends of the side walls 13, and the shoulders 18 abutting against the edges thereof. The flanges 19 will engage with the outside of the end walls 13 and the shoulders 2O will engage against the edges thereof in like mannerto shoulders 18. The spring catch will engage with the edge of one of said side walls and the bottom be securely held in place. The top is now placed on the receptacle 1. To place the garbage in the receptacle, the lid 5 is raised and the garbage dumped into the hopper where it is held by the valve 6. The'lid is then lowered and the valve actuated by means of the crank or handle dropping the garbage or refuse into the receptacle 1. The handle is then let go when the valve will suddenly fly back, impelled by the spring 10, l:losing with a sudden jar or shock which will cause the disinfecting `material to be forced through the perforations in the bottom 15 into the receptacle or box 1.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a garbage box the combination with the receptacle having a removable top with a rectangular opening therein and the hopper provided with a hinged lid, of the valve pivoted to said hopper With its shaft extending through said top and provided with a handle, the spring for returning said valve to normal position, the depending walls secured to said valve and the removable perforated bottom connected therewith, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID MARK LEWIS.
