UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MOSES AARON BOROCHOW, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
REFUSE-RECEPTACLE.
To all whom it 'may concer/n:
Be it known that I, Moens A. Bonoonow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Refuse-Receptacles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in receptacles for holding kitchen refuse, and in particular to that type adapted for use in apartment houses, where a division of the refuse is necessary, and one receptacle is provided to deliver same to the basement.
The device consists of a receptacle or box containing a plurality of compartments for the reception of the different kinds of refuse, as garbage, papers, ashes, or any other divisions that may be required.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features `of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved receptacle; Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the same, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view through the same.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, the numeral 9 indicates a cylindrical can used for a receptacle, said can being divided in a plurality of compartments, l0, 11 and 12, formed by suitably fastened dividing plates 13 placed radially within the can. A lid 14 is provided to cover the top of the can 9 and is loosely held by a lip 15 formed around the periphery of the lid 14 and rolling down and under a bead 16, formed in the upper edge of the can 9. Because of this construction the lid 14 may be caused to rotate about the center of the can as an axis, and a sector-shaped opening 17 may be brought over ony one of the compartments that it is desired to lill or empty. A cover 18 is provided, with a Specification of Letters Patent.

downwardly extending lip 19 to t the opening 17 and completely seal the can. Two handles 20 and 21 are provided, the handle 20 being attached to the cover 18 for removing same, the other handle 21 being attached to the lid 14, for the purpose of rotating same.
On the perpendicular walls of the can 9 are attached handles 22, to aid in emptying the can, said handles being placed diametrically opposite each compartment. A chain 23 is attached to the handle 20, and any other projection, such as the upwardly eX- tending knob 24 fastened in the top of the lid 14, said chain being used to prevent the complete detachment of the cover 18 from the can. A handle 25 is suitably fastened to the walls of the can to provide a means for carrying same. Label holders 26 are attached, one on the top for the owners name, and oneV on the walls adjacent each compartment, to specify the sort of refuse to be placed in each compartment, said label holders being composed of channeled pieces in which a card may be inserted.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A device such as described, consisting of a cylindrical receptacle having radial partitions located therein dividing the receptacle into sector-shaped compartments, a lid having a handle by which it may be rotatcd, a sector-shaped opening cut inwardly from the periphery of said lid, conforming to the configuration but a little smaller than the sector-shaped compartments formed in the said receptacle, a closure engaging said sector-shaped opening, and a flange formed upon said closure, which engages the radial partitions when in a closed position to prevent rotation of the said lid, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I alix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MOSES AARON BOROCHOW.
