.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK SIGISMUND SALBERG, a subject of the King of Prussia, residing at London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Dust-Bins, Dust-Carts, and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the application of disinfectants to dust-bins, dust-carts and similar receptacles and will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- 1 Figures 1 and 2 are views of one arrangement applicable either to a dust-bin or dustcart, constructed according to this invention, and Figs. 3 and 4 views of a second arrangement applicable for use as a dust-bin only. Of these drawings Fig. 1 is a vertical cross section showing the chamber in a state of rest. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the chamber during the application of dust or other refuse, and Figs. 3 andgt are perspective views of a dustbin or receptacle, Fig. 3 representing it open,
and Fig. 4 closed. A portion of Fig. 4; is shown broken away to more clearly illustrate the invention.

'The receiving chamber A consists of ends or end plates A which may be connected by bars B or other framework, any suitable material being employed in the construction, say for example wood or wood and iron.
0 are lids hinged to the center bar B and resting upon the side bars B and adapted to be opened as indicated in dotted-lines on the right hand side of Fig. 1 or closed as indicated inv full lines.
D are doors pivoted or hinged at D to a plate E or fixed portion of the framing so as to be capable of turning as indicated on the right hand side of Fig. 2, the spring F (or balance weights) serving to keep these doors in their normal position as shown in Fig. 1 where their lower ends D are in contact with the fixed bars or ledges G whose upper faces are inclined inward and downward to facilitate the introduction of the refuse. When the refuse is tipped into the chamber it falls upon one of the doors D and the ledge G, opening the door by its weight as shown on the right hand side in Fig. 2 and falling through the opening which is provided in the interior of the cart or other receptacle. After the refuse has fallen through, the door closes again under the influence of the spring F.
The receiving chamber A is open at both sides so that dust can be tipped through either side.
Above the doors D are flaps H hinged or pivoted at H to the central bar B and retained in their normal position shown in Fig. l by the spring I which operates upon the flaps H in a similar manner to the spring F upon the doors D. These flaps H which may be arranged to close by their own weight carry vessels J containing the supply of disinfectant preferably in the form of powder, the vessels being carried by the flaps in any suitable manner, two forms being shown in the drawings. v On the left hand side of the drawings the vessels J are shown directly attached to the flaps and move with them, while on the right hand side they are shown asindirectly connected with the flaps H by the attachment rod K pivoted to the fiap at K, the other end K being supported in a fixed eye-bolt or equivalent K. In either case or with such other attachment as may be adopted the opening of the flaps H when the doors D turn on their pivots causes some of the disinfectant material to fall through the perforated bottom J of the vessel J on to the outside of the door D, whence it slides down on to the refuse or the disinfectant may be discharged directly on to the refuse. Any desired number of the vessels J may be employed or a single one may extend the whole length of the receiving chamber. They maybe carried upon the flaps H or the flaps H may be dispensed with and the vessels J connected directly or indirectly with the doors D. However it is preferred to.
provided with an annular lip M which fits tightly into the open end of the body L, and with rings or handles M for convenience of detaching or removing it from L.
N N are twoflaps or doors hinged at their outer edges by hinges N to the upper surface of the lid M and adapted to meet and partly overlap at theirinner edges when closed down as indicated in Fig. 3. The rabbeted portion N of the flap N does notextend throughout the length of N but is stopped shortat each end so that it may fit between the diametrically opposite parts of the lid M, the whole of this device being preferably so constructed as to render it as nearly air-tight as possible.
To the under side of each of the flaps N N I attach, so that it may be readilyremoved or opened, a box or case J comprising conveniently five walls, viz.-four, more or less perpendicular to N or N and substantially unperforated, and one J preferablyparallel with N or N perforated or formed of wirecloth or equivalent. The boxes J may be secured to N N in any convenient manner. In the drawings they are shown attached by clips 0 which engage with slots in the otherwise unperforated walls of the boxes J". Of these clips only two are shownin the drawings, but there are in all four, one pair for each box. One clip of each of these pairs may be rigidly secured to N or N, and the other pivoted to it so that it can be readily turned aside for releasing the box, as will be well understood.
The boxes J' may however be hinged to the flaps N N or connected to theinby means of slides or equivalent. The boxes J are for con taining the disinfecting material which is preferably in the form of blocks fitting loosely in J and of such a nature that by the mere act of opening or raising the flaps N N and the friction to which it is thereby subjected, particles of it become detached so that upon subsequently closing down the flaps the particles thus detached fall through the interstices of J and are thereby automatically distributed over the refuse last introduced into the receptacle L, or the disinfectant may be in the form of powder as before described.

If desired roughened surfaces or graters may be inserted in the boxes J to facilitate the dis integration of the disinfecting material,or the disinfecting material may be in the form of a pgyvder though this is not considered so desira c.
When it is required to empty the receptacle L, the lid or frame M is lifted out by means ofthe handles M If desired I may construct the lid or frame M with one flap instead of two asshowlnor I may provide more than two such flaps on the same lid, each one be* ing preferably provided with a box J.
What I claim is-- 1. In apparatus for receiving refuse, 850., the combination with a receptacle or receiver, of doors or flaps adapted to have a swinging or oscillating motion, and flaps or doors adapted to be oscillated by the first-mentioned flaps or doors, and receptacles for disinfectant connected with the said second flaps, for the purpose specified.
2. In an apparatus for receiving refuse, the the combination with a receptacle or receiver, of doors or flaps adapted to have a swinging or oscillating motion, a spring adapted to maintain said doors with their upper ends in contact with each other, flaps or doors adapted to be oscillated by the first-mentioned doors, a spring adapted to maintain said second flaps or doors in position to be operated by the first doors, and receptacles or receivers for disinfectant connected with the said second doors, as and for the purpose specified.
3. In an apparatus for receiving refuse, &c., the combination with a receptacle or receiver, of doors or flaps pivoted intermediate their ends, a stop or abutment against which said doorsare adapted to strike at their lower ends, a spring connecting said doors toward their upper ends, doors or flaps pivoted at one end, a spring connected therewith and adapted to maintain the lower ends of said second doors in contact with the first doors, receptacles or receivers for disinfectant connected with said second doors, and lids for the main receptacle, as described.
