Description

S. BRES'T, ASH SIFTER AND RECEPTACLE.
APPLICATION FILED 050.20. 1913.

ASH SIFTER AND RECEPTAGLE.
Specification of Letters: Patent.
Application filed December 20, 1918. I Serial No. 807,816.
To all wkomz't may concern:
Be it known that I, SAM BREST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in
the county of Cook and State of IlllIlOlS,
have invented new and useful Improvements in Ash Sifters and Receptacles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The purpose of this invention is to provide an improved form of ash receptacle and sifter which shall be comparatively cheap in construction and simple in operation. It consists of the features and elements described and shown in the drawings as indicated by the'claims.
In the drawings p 1 Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of an ash receptacle embodying this invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan section taken as indicated at line 2-2 on Fig. 1.
The receptacle shown in the drawings hinged cover, B, which isprovided with a funnel mouth, C, to which there is also fitted a hinged lid, C Within the housing,
A, are disposed a container, D, for sifted ash, and a sliding drawer, E, adapted to receive the unburned coal which is separated from the ash by the sifting process. The sifting is accomplished through a sloping screen, F, which is suspended from the cover, B, by links, F with its apex, F approximately centered in the funnel mouth, C. Thus all the material which is dumped into the funnel mouth must pass either through or over the screen, F, in its descent, and that which passes through the screen is directed by a funnel-shaped flange, F into the container, D. The material which is too large to pass through the screen, F, and which consists principally of unburned coal rolls down the slope of the screen, F, and falling through the chamber, A surrounding the container, D, drops into the drawer, E, which is slidably carried in the lower part of the housing, A
The container, D, is supported above the drawer, E, upon the diagonally disposed members, A which offer practically no 0bstruction to the coal which rolls from the Patented 0011.9, 1917. I
i screen, F, into thedrawer,'E. I Corner fittings, A are fixed to themembers, A ,,for-
definitely locating and retaining the container, D, in a central position. For removal of the ash. it is only necessary to raise the cover, B,which then carrieswithit the suspended screen, F, and its fiange, F giving access to the container, D, which may be removed and emptied. If the device is posi tioned near the stove or furnace with which it is used it will not be necessary to remove the coal drawer, E, since it may be merely drawn out far enough to admit a coal shovel by which the separated coal may be transferred to the stove as needed. The diagonal members, A will be seen to serve not only for supporting the receptacle, D,
but also for bracing, and stiffening the entire housing, A, particularly when they are inserted as a part of the rectangular frame,
A to which the side walls of the container, A, may be fastened.
I claim p e v 1. In an, ash sifter comprising a housing provided with a receiving mouth and an upwardly-openreceptacle within the housing under said mouth; a screen interposed between the mouth and the receptacle and provided with an impervious peripheral flange extending downwardly into the receptacle.
p 2. In an ash sifter comprising a housing having an upwardly-opening cover provided with a receiving mouth and an upwardlyopening receptacle removably mounted within the housing under said mouth; a screen interposed between the mouth and said receptacle extending laterally beyond the periphery of said receptacle and provided with an impervious peripheral flange tapering downwardly into the receptacle, said screen being linked to the cover of the housing and its said flange resting. upon the periphery of the receptacle when said cover is closed. v
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Chicago, Illinois, this 16th day 'of December, 1913.
SAM BREST, Witnesses:-
