- One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a device adapted for installation in the ash pit of furnaces or-the like the construction being such that the cinders may be separated from the ash while within the walls of the heating plant, thereby providing against the escape of dust due to the sifting.

Application filed September 18, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that I, PERCY H. BECKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Ash-Sifters, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to ash sifters shown in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the following specification and claim.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a device adapted for installation in the ash pit of furnaces or-the like the construction being such that the cinders may be separated from the ash while within the walls of the heating plant, thereby providing against the escape of dust due to the sifting.
Another feature of the invention consists in the means provided for delivering the cinders-separated from the ashupon the floor, outside of the ash pit, convenient for shoveling back into the fire pot of the furnace.
Other advantages and improvements will hereafter appear.
In the drawings accompanying this specification Figure 1 is a perspective view of the, device with the screen in position to receive the cinders and ashes dropped from the grate bars, as it would appear when located within the ash pit;-a hooked pole being shown engaging the device for manually agitating it within the pit and for withdrawing it therefrom.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the hinged screen released that the cindersupon separation from the ashesmay be discharged upon the floor outside of the ash pit of the furnace.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view through the device'showing the screen in its normal position as indicated in Fig. 1.

Referring now to the letters of reference placed upon the drawings A, denotes a suitable frame preferably formed of sheet metal provided with sup porting legs B as shown. C, indicates a screen hinged to one end of the frame A, by rings D, or other suitable devices. E, designates hooks secured to the opposite end of the screen, adapted to engage the upper edge of the frame A, to support the screen in position as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3, of the drawings.
F, denotes a pole provided with a hook to engage a loop or handle Gr, secured to the end wall of the frame A.
Having indicated the several parts by reference letters the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood.
The frame A, is of suitable size to adapt it for installation in the ash pit of a furnace (not shown) to receive directly the ashes and cinders discharged through the grate bars; the screen C, being supported in a horizontal position by the hooks E as inclicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. To separate the cinders from the dust or ashes, the hooked pole F, is engaged with the handle G, of the frame,the operator manually agitating the device within the confines of the ash pit of the furnace. Upon the separation of the dust from the cinders the device is drawn through the ash pit opening sufliciently to admit discharging the cinders upon a shovel or the floor of the furnace room, when they may be shoveled back into the fire pot to bank the fire. To discharge the cinders from the device, the hooks E, are disengaged from the frame A, thereby permitting the free end of the screen to drop to the floor, or shovel,-as the case may beforming an inclined way, down which the cinders slide.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is An ash sifting device of the character described comprising a frame constituting the side and end walls of a receptacle, means to support the frame in elevated position, a screen hingedly connected to the lower edge of one of said walls, books of a length subthe frame the screen may be lowered to an inclined position.
