IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE SCREENS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,245, dated September 22, 1874 application filed August 15, 1874.

To all whomc't may concern Be it known that I, HENRY L. LEACH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Portable Coal- Screen and Dust-Box, of which the following is a specification:

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my portable coal-screen and dust-box, taken on line 0 c, Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The object of my invention is to provide, for use in coal-yards, and for other purposes, a portable screen and dust-box, by whichthe separation of the coal from the adhering dust and smaller particles may be attended to with less trouble to the workman, and the yard kept clean from accumulating dust without requiring extra labor for carrying the same away.

My invention consists of a box-frame placed on wheels, which is provided with an inclined adjustable screen, and with hinged and detachable doors at the rear end for getting at the dust, and emptying the same, as required.

In the drawing, A represents the outer box or casing, made of wood, sheet metal, or other material, and placed on wheels B, for being readily removable from place to place. The inclined front part of the box A is open for admitting the screen 0, made of wider or narrower wire-cloth. Screen 0 is supported by the projecting front ends of its side pieces D on the lower front part of box A, and at the upper part by adjustable levers E, which are pivoted to the lower part of the side walls of box A, and thrown under suitable angles to either side of their vertical position, so that the screen may be placed into a more or less inclined position thereon, as required by the quality and size of the coal or other article to be screened. Vertical strengthening-pieces F, of the side walls of box A, define the lowermost position of screen 0, as indicated in Fig. 1. The coal-dust and other screenings collect at the bottom of the box, which is moved from place to place around the coal stored up in the yard, so that the same may be screened without leaving any dust-heaps on the ground. The rear part of the box is provided with an upper hinged door, G, which is held in closed position by hooks, spring-latches, or otherwise, and with a lower detachable door, G, which is applied in similar suitable'manner. The upper door serves, when opened, for introducing a rake or shovel for carrying the dust back from below the front part of the screen, without losing any part thereof. The lower one serves for emptying the collected dust at asuitable place of deposit. The doors may also be arranged at the sides, or a trap-door at the bottom, as found most convenient. The bottom may be constructed under suitable inclination toward the rear, and other minor alterations may be made, as found advantageous by practical application.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The movable coal-screen and dust-box for coal -yards, &c., consisting of wheeled incasing-box A, inclined adjustable screen D, and doors G G, for removing the dust and screenings collecting in the box, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
