WILLIAM MONTGOMERY, on CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN ASH-SIFTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,57 1, dated April 2 1 75; application filed February 13, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAMMONTGOMERY, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined. Fire-Proof Ash Box and Sifter, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a vertical section of my improved ash box and sifter. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, the cover being removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved ash box and sifter, which shall be so constructed as to be entirely fire-proof, while enabling the ashes to be sifted Without making a dust, and which at the same time shall be simple in construction and convenient In use.
The invention will first be described, and then pointed out in the claim.
A is a sheet-iron cylindrical box, which is provided with legs B, six inches, more or less, in height, so as to be supported so far above the floor that the said floor cannot be set on fire by the heat from the bottom of the box A. The legs B may be riveted to the bottom of the box A; or their upper ends may be set in sockets riveted to said bottom. The box A is provided with handles a, for convenience in handling it. C is the upper part or sifter, the lower part of which is so formed as to fit into the mouth of the box A. The sifter O has a shoulder formed upon it, to rest upon the upper edge of the box A, as shown in Fig. 1. In the lower part of the sifter G is secured a screen, D, which may be made of woven wire, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or of perforated sheet metal. When made of wire it should be provided with cross-wires, to prevent it from sagging. The screen D should be secured to the case 0 of the sifter by strips or clasps of metal 01, riveted to it, so that the screen, when \vorn, can be readily detached, and replaced with a new one. The screen D is provided with handles 0, for convenience in handling and operating it. The sifter O is provided with a closely-fitting cover, E, to prevent the fine ashes from escaping while the sifter is being used. To one side of the sifter O are attached the edges of a semi-cylindrical plate, F. which passes through a hole in the screen D, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to form a spout, through which stones, slate, cinders, and other rubbish may be dropped into the ash-box A without raising the sifter O. 7
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The spout or channel F in the sifter G D, communicating with the ash-box A, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
WILLIAM MONTGOMERY.
