Description

e. w. TAYLOR. I Improvement in Ash-Sifters. ZNQ" 114 224 "Pat'ehted A-pri 25,l'87l.
ttnittli state GEORGE W. TAYLOR, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
Letters Patent No. 114,224, dated April 25, 1871.
IMPRQVEMENT IN ASH-SIFTERS:
The Schedule referred to'in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. TAYLOR, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and improved Ash-Sifter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the exterior of the apparatus;
Figure 2 is a sectional elevation of the same; and
' Figure 3 is a top view of the sitter proper.
This invention relates to improvement in ash-sifters, and consists in the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and claimed. These parts consist of a cylindrical case, provided with a deflected perforated bottom, and a removable cover fitting it to perform the ofiice of a sifter for coalashes, cinders, 860., and of a pan on which said sifter is placed to be rotated or vibrated in a horizontal plane to cause the ashes to fall 'in-the pan, each part being provided with handles crab-ails for convenience of operation.
Referring to the drawinga is the receiving-pan.
b, the cover thereof.
0, its perforated bottom.
(I, the ash-pan.
c; the cover-handle.
ff, the sifter-ears.
g g, theash-pan cars.
It, a flange on the sitter which enables it to sit upon the ash-pan and be vibrated or shaken thereon sufliciently to sift the refuse from the cinders in the Sifter;
'lhe ash-pan is not disturbed during this operation, but remains stationary on the ground or floor.
No dust can escape from either ash-pan or sifter as long as the latter sits upon the former.
It will be observed that the part (i of the sifter is adapted for use in various other ways, or for other purposes than that here described.
Also, the part a is so constructed as to be employed in carrying coal cinders, or even cinders and ashes.
commingled, with convenience and with little danger of any portion thereof escaping.
The deflected bottom 0 being beveled or inclined around the edge, the friction resulting from. the vibration of the part a is much less than it would be if a vertical wall or flange were substituted, while the ashes cannot effect a lodgment around the edge of the bottom inside the part a, as they would otherwise do, but are forced to concentrate over the perforations, and are thus readily shaken through into the pan d.
' I am aware of the use of sifters in which one part is adapted to vibrate, the same being arranged inside the ash-pan; but they are open to objections which my invention overcomes.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved ash-sitter herein described, consisting of the part (1, having the cover I), flange h, and
deflected perforated bottom 0 with an inclined or beveled edge, and the ash-pan (1, said parts a and d being provided respectively with the handles f and g, all as and for the purpose specified.
GEORGE W. TAYLOR.
