Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COLLINS MOGLEAVER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,081, dated December 17, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, COLLINS McCLEAvER, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Coal Scuttle and Sifter; and l do hereby declare that the following is al full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The figure of the drawing is a representation of a sectional view of my combined coal scuttle and sifter.
My invention has relation to a combined coal scuttle and sitter; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the screen, and in the novel method of hin gin g the scuttle to a portable frame, all substantially as hereinafter more fully described.
Referring to the drawing, A designates the coal-scuttle, of a tapering form, and covered to exclude dust. At B1 is a hinged lid to cover an opening, B, through which the coal is put into and taken from the scuttle. An opening, B2, at the opposite end of the scuttle is used to pour the siftings or ine coal-dust through and out ofthe scuttle. This opening is covered when not in use by a lid, C. D designates an L-shaped wire-screen, on which the coal is poured, which is afterward sifted by agitatin g the scuttle. The dust falls to the bottom of the scuttle, while the lumps remain on the screen. F designates the sides of a frame to which the scuttle is attached by means of two arms, G, on either side, depending and pivoted at their lower ends to the scuttle midway between top and bottom, and at their upper ends to the tops of the frames, as shown.
This arrangement of the scuttle enables it to be easily vibrated so as to thoroughly agitate the coal contained within it, and thereby produce the desired result.
The bail H 4is attached to the sides of the frame F, so that the whole apparatus may be carried about from room to room,`and used for sifting coal or ashes. The scuttle may be easily tilted in dumping the coal upon Athe v ire or pouring out the ashes.
For convenience in handling, rings K are attached to the ends ofthe scuttle.
It will be observed that the arrangement of the screen prevents any lumps of coal from falling out with the dust, the dust spout and coal-spout being at opposite ends of the scut-tle.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The bent screen D, in combination with the coal-scuttle A, having the coa1openin gs B and the dust-openings B2 located at opposite ends of said scuttle, substantially as speciiied.
2. The combination of the coallscuttle A, screen D, supports F, and pivoted arms G, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
