ASH-ASIFTVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,852, dated April 23, 1889.
Application filed September 9, 1887. Serial No. 249,211. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. PEIRcE, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Ash-Sifters, ofwhich the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to ash-sitters; and it consists of certain improvements all of which are fully set forth in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, which form part thereof.
In carrying out my invention I provide a lower receptacle for receiving the ashes and an upper preferably removable and rocking sitter provided with a flexible connectingtube to convey the ashes from the sifter to the receivingreceptacle. The sifter above its screen is also provided with an outlet for the collected coals, whereby they may be readily discharged.
The object of my invention is to form a simple and portable sitter which while in action shall retain all dust, and also to so construct the parts that the operation of the apparatus can be put into effect without much labor on the part of the operator.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the sitter part slightly raised from the receiving-receptacle, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of same.
A is the receptacle for the dust and ashes, and is provided on the top with an inlet, C, and preferably with a removable drawer, B, which receives the deposited ashes, &c., and enables it to be withdrawn from the receptacle A for discharge from time to time.
E is the Sifter-compartment, and is pivoted on trunnions 6 upon standards D, secured to the receptacle A. This compartment E has screen G for separating the coals from the ashes, an inlet-door, I, at the top, and inclined bottoms F terminating in the discharge-opening f. The ashes which pass out of the 0pening f enter a cloth or flexible tube, L, which is secured about the opening f and terminates at the bottom in awire or metal rim, M, which may fit over opening 0 in receptacle A and clamped down into place by cleats N N and turn-button O. I
On one end of the compartment E above the screen G is a sliding or other door, H, from which the collected or screened coals may be discharged upon tipping the compartment.
Before filling the sitter with the mixture of coals andashes to be treated the hook J is hookedinto the eye K on the compartment E.
so as to hold the latter in a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 2. After being filled the lid or door I is closed and the hook J unlatched. The sifter compartment is then rocked or oscillated upon the trunnions e, causing all of the ashes and dustto pass through into the drawer B. After the ashes are removed the end of compartment E having door H is lowered and slide H withdrawn, (see Fig. 1,) and the coals removed.
By turning the turn-button O the compartment E, with its flexible tube D, may be removed from the receptacle A for convenience in shipping or handling and for repairs.
The minor details may be modified with out departing from my invention, though I prefer the construction there shown.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of receptacle A, having opening C and standards D, with sifter, compartment E, having screen G, inlet-door I, and trunnions e, to work on said standards, and flexible tube L, having rim M, and means, substantially as described, to secure the rim to the receptacle.
2. The combination of receptacle A, having opening G and standards D, removable drawer B for said receptacle, with sitter-compartment E, having screen G, inlet-door I, inclined bottom F, with outlets f, and trunnions e, to work on said standards, and flexible tube L, having rim M, and means, substantially as described, to secure the rim to the receptacle A.
