To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, J AKOB KOHLMANN, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Appliances for Ash Pails or Cans, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to ash cans or pails and the object thereof is to provide an appliance, whereby a dustless sifting and sorting of the coal removed from the stove will be rendered possible.

To accomplish my object, I provide a receptacle adapted to be removably placed into the pail and provided with a double bottom, one of which is formed as a sieve, and the other is solid and tiltablet The tiltable bottom is provided with means, whereby on closing the pail, the solid bottom will be tilted into open position, permitting the ashes and small particles of the coal contained in the said removable receptacle to drop into the pail.

My invention also consists in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification and in which similar reference letters denote corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a vertical section of an ash can containing my appliance; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the can, the cover of the pail being removed; Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 is a section on line 44: of Fig. 2.

(4 denotes an ordinary ash can or pail of tin or the like. Adapted to fit into the mouth of the ash can is a receptacle 7), which is shaped to conform with the shape of the can and which is formed. at its upper end with an annular flange 0 which when the receptacle is placed into the can, will rest on the upper margin of the latter holding the receptacle in position. This receptacle is provided with a double bottom, of which one, cl, is perforated or formed of a netting to serve as a sieve, and the other, e, is solid and tiltable. This tiltable bottom in the example shown, consists of two wings or halves, which at their adjoining edges 6 are hinged or otherwise tiltably mounted on a cross spindle f secured in the receptacle below the perforated bottom cl. Secured to the outer margin of each half of the tiltable bottom e is a U-shaped wire, or hoop g, the lateral parts of which are slightly curved and slidably guided in sockets h secured to the receptacle 6 and the transversal portion of which is adapted to project outwardly from the receptacle 5, when the tiltable bottom wings are in closed position. The cover 2' for the can is so admeasured, that its depth is smaller than the height of the outwardly projecting part of the hoop 9, so that when the cover 2' of the can is put onto the latter, the hoop 9 will be depressed, causing the wings of the solid bottom 6 to swing into open position. Thus the coal removed from the sto e instead of, as hitherto, being thrown directly into the can, and then sorted, which causes much dust, is thrown into the receptacle 7), and the latter placed into the can. By closing the latter by means of the cover 2', the tiltable bottom 6 will be caused to open, permitting the ashes and small particles of coal to drop down into the pail, while coarse pieces of coal will remain on the perforated bottom (Z of the receptacle. A little shaking of the closed pail will help the assortment, without making any dust. The receptacle may then be removed from the can and the can containing the ashes closed and put outside to be emptied.

WVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In an article of manufacture, the combination with an ash can having a cover, of an appliance, consisting of a receptacle adapted to removably fit in said ash can, and having a double bottom, of which one is sieve-shaped and the other solid and tiltable, and means whereby the said tiltable bottom will be tilted into open position by the cover of the can, when put on to the latter.
