COMBINED CAN AND SIFTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,286, dated March 22, 1881.

Application filed February 14, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL WHITNUM, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Can and Sifter; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

The object ofthis invention is to construct a strong, simple, and durable device for siftin g ashes without scattering around the dust or ashes, or subjecting the operator to such dust as will invariably arise while siftin g ashes in a dry state.

To such end my invention consists in acombined ash can and sifter, composed of a can or receptacle provided with a cover, and containing a sieve having handles for operating the same extending up through apertures in the cover, whereby the sieve can be operated with the cover on the can, and the siftings will fall into the can below the sieve, which is arranged within the same near its upper end, as hereinafter more fullydescribed.

The drawing is a section taken on a central vertical plane through my improved combined ash can and sifter.

The letter A indicates the can, which is preferably made of galvanized metal, and which may be of any desired capacity. This can is provided with a cover, B, for closing the same, and it is further provided with handles 0, whereby it can be lifted and readily carried when desired.

D indicates the sieve or sifter, which is provided with the usual perforated or wire bottom. This sifter is adapted to fitinto the can,

(No model) and is supported therein by a flange, E, secured to the inner side of the can, near the top end thereof, so as to leave considerable space below the sifter for the ashes which pass through the same. The sifter is provided with vertical rods F F, which extend up through apertures G in the cover, and constitute handles for operating the sitter.

The cover B is either thickened or provided with washers H at the points where the handles pass through it, to prevent the handles from wearing away the cover. The cover is also provided with a handle, I, so that it can be readily lifted from the can.

After placing a suitable quantity of ashes in the sieve or sifter the operator will close the can by means of its cover, and then, grasping the handles of the sifter, will shake the same up and down until the ashes have been well sifted. As the can is closed there will be no dust arising therefrom during the sifting of the ashes, and the siftings will be collected in the space within the can below the sitter.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A combined ash can and sit'ter comprising the portable can A, provided with a cover, B, and handles 0, a flange, E, secured to the interior of the can, and a sifter, D, resting upon said flange, and having the straight vertical handles F, extending up through apertures in the cancover, substantially as described.
