DUSTLESS ASH-SIFTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 1918.
Application filed June 28, 1918. Serial No. 242,476.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ANTHONY (LNETTI and CANIO NETTI, citizens of Italy, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dustless Ash- Sifters; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in ash sifters and particularly to dustless sifters.
One object of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this character which can be easily and quickly opened and closed when inserting the ashes to be sifted and when removing the dust and cinders.
Another object is to provide a novel and simple structure of this character whereby ashes can be placed in the device and the annoyance of flying dust avoided.
A further object is to provide a novel and improved device of this character wherein the sifting drum forms a removable part of the casing and which can be quickly and easily removed.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved ash sifter.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2
Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectlonal view taken on the line 41 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is an end view of the device.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view showing the use of the plate 32.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, 10 represents a casing formed referably of metal and having the removable slidable drawer 11 in the bottom thereof, .said drawer being withdrawn through one end of the casing, as clearly shown in the drawings. The upper edges of the end walls of the casing are formed with the arcuate cut-away portions 12. It will be noted that ash the longer sides of the casing thus extend above these portions 12. A drum which includes the end disks 13, and the intermediate perforated cylindrical portion 14: is disposed in the upper portion of the casing. Formed on the outer margin of each of the cutaway portions 12 is an offset grooved flange 15 in .which the end disk 13 of the drum is disposed, and in which said disk is adapted to rotate. Reinforcing members 16 are secured to the outer faces of the disks, and carried on one of these members is a crankhandle 19, which is adapted to be grasped to rotate the drum. Hinged to the upper edge of one of the side walls of the casing is an arcuate cover 20, the free end of-which is formed with a detent member 21 for engagement with a keeper 22 carried by the upper edge of the other side wall for holding the cover in closed position. In the cylindrical portion of the drum there is formed an opening 23 through which the ashes to be sifted are introduced into the drum, said opening being closed by a hinged door 2 1, which is arranged to be held in closed position by a fastening means 25 and 26, similar to the one of the cover 90. The side edge portions of the cover 20 are formed with the grooves 27 which receive the upper portions of the disks of the drum. as clearly seen in the sectional view Fig. 3.
Secured to the longer side walls of the casing, and within the casing. are the downwardly and inwardly inclined plates 30, the lower edges of which are disposed inwardly of the side walls of the drawer. whereby when the ash dust falls from the drum it will be directed into the drawer. and not be permitted to get between the sides of the drawer and the sides of the casing.
Secured to the end walls of the casing. and disposed in a manner similar to the plates 30, are the plates 31, the same serving a similar purpose to that of the said plates 30.
When the ashes are to be placed in the drum, the drum is removed from the casing by opening the cover 20, and lifting the drum from the flanges 15, by the handles 15., The door of the drum is then opened to permit the introduction of the ashes thereinto. To prevent the dust falling through the openings in the lower side of the drum. while the ashes are being placed thereinto. there is provided a semi-cylindrical imperforate plate 32 which has the legs 28 for sup- (is-A the cover 20 closed and secured, after which the crank handle is turned to rotate the drum and cause the separation of the cinders and dust, the dust falling into the drawer while the Cinders, which are too large to pass through the openings of the druin, remain therein.
hatis claimed is: '1. An ash-Sifter including acasing having the end Walls formed wlth cutaway-portions,
the-edge walls of said cut-away portions being formed with grooved flanges, a drum inlrclilding end disks rotatably disposed in said grooved flanges, and a movable cover for 'the c'asingrhavi-ng grooved flanges in-the end portions thereof for the reception of the edges of said disks.
.2. An ash Sifter including a casing having arcuate recesses in the end walls thereof and grooved fiangesin the said recesses, a sifting drum disposed in the casing and including a perforated cylindrical portion and end disks, said disks being rotatively supported insaid grooved flanges, a removable drawer in the lower portion of the casing, downwardly and inwardly extending plates secured to the walls of the casing and disposed over the upper edges of said drawer,a grooved cover font-he'casing receiving the edges of said vend disks, .andfmeans for rotating said drum.
'In'testirnony whereof we a'ifi; our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
