Description

J'. H. RAYMOND.
ASH-SIFTER.
No.178,381. Patented June 6,1876.
wnuzssas: on: 6% 7 2 WW z momms.
UNITED STATES JOHN H. RAYMOND, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
IMPROIVEIIVIENTIN ASH-SIFTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,381, dated June 6, 1876; application filed March 25, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN HENRY RAYMOND, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have in vented anew and Improved Ash-Sifter, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal, and Fig. 2 a vertical transverse section, of my improved ash-Sifter, resp ctively, on the lines a; m, Fig. 2, and 3 y, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention consists in an outer receptacle having circular guide-grooves in connection with a swinging cover of arch form, and having lateral end flanges, as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, A represents a receptacle that is made in theshape of a coal-scuttle, with bail for carrying the same. At' the inside of receptacle A is a cylindrical drum, B, of perforated or reticulated sheet metal, said drum revolving by shaft and hand-crank in perforations of the receptacle. The siftingdrum B is made of a fixed section, G, and a swinging section, 0, the latter sliding in guide-grooves a of the side walls of the drum, so as to be readily opened or closed. The sliding section 0 is locked by a suitable catch device to the fixed section of the d-um when the ashesare placed into the same. An arc-shaped cover, D, is guided in circular grooves b of the side walls of the receptacle A, which grooves are concentric to the shaft of the drum, and carried bya knot,
d, of its lateral flange part D, either into po- I the bottom of the receptacle. The flange D of the core D bears, when the cover is in open or closed position, against the walls of the receptacle and prevents the escape of dust.
'VVhen the ashes are sifted the cover is thrown open, as shown in Fig. 1. The drum is also opened, and the coal remaining therein removed, by holding the drum and tilting the receptacle, the coal passing over the flange and spout to a pail or other receptacle. The
ashes are removed by closing the cover and allowing them to pass out between the drum and receptacle.
The ashes may, by this sifter, be separated in a convenient manner from the unburned coal, without the annoyance of the present sifting. The entire sifter is made of sheet metal, which allows the sifting of hot ashes without danger.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, in an ash -sifter, of 'a swinging arc-shaped cover, having lateral end flanges, and an outer receptacle, having circular guide-grooves, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
JOHN HENRY RAYMOND. Witnesses:
