ASH-SIFTER.

SPECIFICATION forming' part cf Letters Patent N0. 417,562, dated December 17, 1889.

Be it known that I, JOHN KARLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash- Sifters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an ash-sifter, and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a vertical section of the ashsifter, with the folding chut-e in position to discharge the coals. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken in a transverse direction to that shown in Fig. l. Figs. 3 and 4 are views of the folding chute.

The case is Inadeof wood, and consists of a rectangular box having a peculiar formation at the base part, which is occupied by the ash-drawer. The base part A of the case is larger than the upper part A', the lower portion f1 of the walls of which set down within the upper port-ion c of the walls of the base,

' and thus a drawer-recessd is formed below the lower edge of the upper walls b and within the base-walls. By this means when the ash-drawer F is in position its walls will occupy the said recess CZ, and line siftings falling from the screen or `cylinder G will not As thel Vbetween the drawer and the case, consequently the drawer may be drawn out at any time, and when again inserted the entrance to its position will not be impeded by an accumulation of ash-dust in the base.

The cylinder G has two circular heads i, mounted'l on an axle or shaft j, one end of which forms a crank 7c. A pin Z, adjoining each head, is passed through a hole in the axle, and a screw m, laterally through one end of the pin into the head confines the pin. The cylinder G is woven wire, of size to serve as a screen, and is fastened to the two heads z'. A hinged cover N in the side of the cylinder gives access thereto. A turn-button o at the center and another p at each end coniine the cover after it has been closed.

A circular metal plate q on the inner side of each side wall of the case serves as a bearing for the shaft j, and a washer fr on the outside of the heads serves to keep the cylinder from shifting endwise.

The chute is made in two sections s s', which are hinged together at t. One section is provided with hooks u, which take into suitable loops o on the inner surface of the back wall of the case. Each section has upright side iianges w, and the two sections fold when not in use, so that the bottoms are brought in contact, as shown in Fig. 4. When the chute is in use, as shown in Fig l, the side flanges zu of the two sections have their ends w' abutting, and thus the two sections are kept in the form of an incline plane. A retaining-bar is pivoted at y by one end to the bottom of one section and projects across the hinged joint on to the bottom of the other section, and when so placed serves to keep the two sections extended while the chute is being handled in attaching to or detaching it from the loops o. When it is desired to fold the chute, this pivoted bar must be turned around so as to have position on the bottom of one section only. When folded, the chute may be inclosed within the case above the ash-drawer and the door H may be closed. A hinged cover z on top closes the case.

Having described my invention, I claim- The combination, in an ash-sifter, of a lower casing having a base A and an upper casing A', a drawer F, having its walls flush with the walls of the upper part A', a door hinged to the upper casing and formed in two parts, so as to conform to the inner walls of the base and upper part, a cylindrical hinged sifter located and adapted to revolve in said upper part, and a folding chute S S', located within the casin g and adapted to fold therein, as set forth.
