To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS P. BOLGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gloucester, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ash- Sifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ash sitters and more particularly to shaking sitters, the object being to provide an inclosed sitter so constructed that it can be readily placed over a barrel so that ashes can be sifted without any dust to amount to anything.
Another object of my invention is to provide the sifter with an inclined shaking sieve arranged under the bottom of the hopper and extending out under a removable top so that the ashes can be easily removed if they become clogged.
This invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this specicfiation:--Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved sitter attached to a barrel. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the sitter attached to a barrel showing a bucket attached. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the sitter. Fig. at is a section taken on lines l-4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an inverted plan view of the sitter.
Referring to the drawings A indicates a metal cap adapted to fit snugly over the ordinary barrel having a square opening in the top over which the square opening of the casing B, is adapted to be secured which is provided with an inclined end 13, having a hopper C, extending upwardly therefrom, provided with a hinged top C. The side B of the casing tapers downwardly from the hopper having outwardly flanged upper edges B over which the guide-edges D, of the top D, are adapted to fit. The top D, is provided with a flanged end D adapted to engage the flanged upper edges of the end 13*, of the casing, which has a spout E, connected thereto, and to the bottom of the bottom of the casing. A hook F, is secured on the outside of the end adapted to support the bucket under the spout. An opening D, is formed in the top D, adjacent its upper end in which the bowed portion G, of a Specification of Letters Patent.

spring G, secured to the hopper, is adapted to fit and securely lock the upwardly projecting flange D, against the outer face of the hopper. when the topis pushed upwardly by the handle D Brackets H, are secured on the inside of the side of the casing on which the side bars of the sieve I, are adapted to slide. provided with a handle J which extends out through an opening C in the hopper under the inclined bottom plate C by means of which the sieve is worked back and forth so to cause the ashes to drop through the sieve into the barrel and the coal and cinders to slide downwardly over the sieve out the spout into the bucket. The plate C forms a guide or chute which directs the ashes fed through the hopper, into the sieve, and pre vents the ashes from passing into the barrel or other receptacle before being sifted, when the sieve is slid forward during the shaking operation. The top A, being provided with an inclined plate A, formed by turning up a part of the top atone end of the opening The upper end of the sieve being so that the ashes at the lower end of the sieve will drop into the plate and slide into the barrel.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have provided a very novel sitter which is very simple and cheap in construction and one which is very effective in use.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent An ash sifter comprising a cap, a casing carried by the cap, a hopper supported by the casing and having a side opening, the said casing extending beyond thecap, a spout carried by the casing, an inclined, slidably mounted sieve arranged within the casing and extending under the hopper, a handle connected to the upper end of the sieve and working through the opening in the hopper, an inclined plate arranged above the upper end of the sieve, and an inclined plate arranged below the lower end of the sieve, said plates respectively directing ashes upon the sieve and through the cap.
