Description

@uitrit ttttrs istmt @Hirn DUNCAN MORRISON, OFIORTLANI), MAINE.
Letters Pate-nt No. 75,043, dated ltfarclt 3, 1868.
IMPEOVED GOAL-SIITBR.
To `ALL wHoM 1T MAY o oNenRN:
'Beit known that I, DUNCAN MORRIso-N,of Portland, in the county of Cumberland, and State o'f. Maine,
'have invented a new and useful Improved Coal-Sitter; and I hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear,
und exactrdescription thereof, which will enable others to make andluse my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of thisspeciication, in which- Figure 1 is a. side view of my invention.
Figure 2, a top plan of the same.
Figure 3, a side sectional elevation of the saine.
My invention has 'in View the production of a convenient combination of devices for sifting coal, and for removing .the useful and waste parts thereof, .when thus separated. It consists of a rectangular box, having a sifter, the means of operating the same, and twohods or receptacles, the one to receive the useful and the other'tlie waste portion ofthe article sifted, all constructed, arranged', and operating as hereinafter more particularly described.
A shows the rectangular box. The box has two sliding covers on the top a a. These covers have handles b and slide in a. channel formed by the overlapping piece c. cZ is a bail7 by which the whole may be raised and carried. e e are the outer sides of the two hods or receptacles, and close the two spaces in one side ofthe I rectangular box, and both sides of the partition f, fig. 3. They thus form a portion of one side of the box,
which side is represented in iig. 1. g g show handles to these hods by which they may be drawn out. When pushed in, they tightly close the side of the hex A. The hods are shown at 1-2, fig. 3, in the section. Inlinerliatoly over the hod v2 is the si'ter 7L. The siftcr is vibrated by means of the crank z'on the outside ofthe box.
The shaft of the cra-nic passes through the wallet the box, the other end thereof passing through the piece j secured to the sides ofthe box. The shaft has another crank, an. To this crank is attached the Wire, Ic, which is'also attached to the two sides of the sifter at the upper end. The siftcr is inclined, as shown in g. 3, the
I lower end rcstingnpon the piece n. The hod 1 is intended to receive the sift-ed coal. 'n n/represent two'sides of a. dei-'ice 'to direct the ashes into the hed 2, the two other sides not boing shown in the section. 3-4 repre- Sentparts of a similar 'device to idirect the unsiftcl coai and ashes when first poured into the sifter. The two covers a a s'tide one under the other. o shows. n. compartment for the reception of any articles commonly employed about a stove, such as a brush, die. When the two hotls 1-2 are shoved into the box, in their approspecified.
priatc places, and the covers a a nre closed, the box is sutiiciently tight to prevent the escape of dust.
i I The operation of the device is as follows: Open the cover a and pour in upon the siftcr L the mixedcoal and ashes; turn the crank ,and the sifter, being tliereby agitated, as before described, the ashes will fall through into the hed 2, irhile the particles of coal sliding along the inclined sifter will fall from the end thereof into the heil I. The hods muy then he withdrawn by their handles y g', and the contents thereof emptied from the same.
I do not claim the combination of a coal-hod and sitter; neither do I claim any of the separate parts in the device above described. I'do not claim tighteningr the -joints between the coal and ash-receptacles, shown in the patent of Wiliam-Jones, October l-l, 1862, No. 35,659. This invention is further different from mine in the manner and means of operating the same.
lVhat I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is f Thearrangcmentof the several devices hercinbeforc described, in the manner set forth, and for the purposes DUNCAN MORRISON.
