IMPROVEMENT IN' ASH-SIFTERS.
@La .stimule nitrati tu in tigen Entert patent mit mating gmt nt the same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: v
Be it known that I, .CHARLES F. MYER, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash-Sitters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of thelsame, reference being had to the' annexed drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification, in which= Figure 1 is a perspective view of said improved ash-sifter; and
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken through said fig. 1.
The same letters refer to like parts in each of said figures.l
. The nature of my said invention consists, first, Ain the combination, with a revolving druni-sifter and right and left fixed inclined guide-plates, of a reversing or shifting guide-plate, which is so arranged as to voperate to guide the ashes into the ash-box, and when reversed or shifted it then Vguides the coal and einders into the'coal-box, in'manner substantially as hereinafter fully described. My invention also consists in the employment of two drawers or boxes, as arranged, to be used in combination with a drum-sitter, right and left inclined fixed guide-plates, and a shifting or reversing guide-plate, in manner and for the purpose as hereinafter fully described. My invention also. consists in, when it is used in combination with a revOlving sifter and with right and left xed inclined guide-plates, and two drawers or boxes, of placingthe journals of the shifting or reversing guide-plate, before mentioned, eccentrically, so that when the plate is hung in position for use it may have, when reversed from right to left, and vice versa, its lower edger project well over one of said vdrawers orboxes, to thereby either convey ashes or coals wholly intov their respective boxes, in manner substantially as' hereinafter fully. described. n
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I now proceed to fully describeits eon= struction and operation.
In the annexed drawings, A. represents a suitable case or box, made of woodor iron, within which, and at its upper part, is arranged,so as to rotate on journals, the cylindrical or drnmfshaped wire sifterl D, which is turned by a crank, F, and itis provided with a doorand latch, C', ito receive and discharge ashes and cinders through. Below this drum-sifter, and arranged vin fixed positions lengthwise with it, and inclined at any proper angle inwards towards each other, are the right and left guide-plates II and H1, in manner substantially 'as' shown in said drawings. Below, Vand in a vertical line passing through the centre of the opening at the lower edges of the aforesaid lfined ineiined plates H and H1; properly arranged in lengthwise position withsaid fixed plates, and to operate en journals -fby means vof -a crank 'or handle, c, is the reversing or shifting guide-plate E. This said plate is adjdsted and arranged in such relative position to the aforesaid fixed guide-plates that, when it is shifted respectively from right to left, and eine versa, its upper `edge will lap on to, or make connection with, oneof those plates to convey either ashes or coal, as' desired, to theirrespective boites. The journals or bearings of this said shifting guide-plate are placed eccentrieally, or about half way between its bottom edge and its centre, inA manner substantially as showni'n said drawings, so that, when shifted into position for con veying ashes or coal, pits lower edge, b, may project lover the edge of the ash orcoal-box, and thereby convey either the coal or ashes entirely into-their respective boxes withoutyspilling any of either into the box not intended for it. J is a division-plate, separa-ting the lower partl of case A int-o' two parts, each part having' fitted to slide 4into it portable pans or drawers, G and G, which are to be used respectively for ash and coal-boxesi The operation of my improved ash-sifter is as follows: Ashes and cinders are put into the drum-sitter D through its door, the door is closed and latched, and the top cover B shut. If ashes are to Ibe conveyed into ash-box G, the reversing-plate E is then set in positio,n,as shown in iig. 1 of annexed drawings. vThe drumsifter is now revolved by the crank F, and, when the oinders are suiiiciently screened from ashes, the lreversing plate E is then shifted'into its opposite position, as shown'n iig. 2, the cover B is lifted, and the drun1-siftcris turned until the door C lis reached, when its latch is loosened, and the drum turned gradually until the door is brought below. Then `the cinders lresting uponv it cause it to open, and they fall out into their proper box G1, i
in manner as shown in iig. 2, During the operation of sifting ashes in' this sifter its outer case is closed tight, and no ashes can escape' therefrom Having thus fullydescribed -my invention, what-I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is=
1. In combination with :L revolving'druln-sifter D and right; and 10ft inclined fixed guide-platesvH :xn-d H,I aim the reversing or shifting guideplate oonstruetcd and arranged substantially :un described, and oper- :ing in the manner and for the purpose as set forth.
2. In combination with a. drum-sifter D, right and left fixed guide-plates H and H, and ashifing guide- .ate E, I claim the employment of t-Wo ash-pans or boxes Gr and G1, arranged in manner :md for the purpose L described.
3. In combination with a. revolving drum-sifter D, right and left x'ed inclined guide-plntes I-IandI-Il, arid 7o ash-pzms or boxes Gr and G1, arranged as shown, I `claim Vplacing the journalS of the shifting guide-plateE scentrically, to operate inmnnner and for the purpose a-s herein shown.
