CHARLES BREASTED, OF CHICAGOfILLINOIS..
Letters Patent'No. 77,578, dated May 5, v1868.
BARREL-sieren.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, CHARLES BREASTED, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sitters for Coal-Ashes; and I do hereby declare that the fol.v
lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specieation, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts wherever they occur.' v
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
My invention relates to ash-sifters or screens, and consists in a novel construction and arrangement of devices, by which the operator can conveniently and thoroughly separate the ashes from the unbuirnt or partially burnt coal without being annoyed by any dust. v
In the drawingsy Figure I is a view ofa vertical section taken on the line y y ot' g. 2, and
Figure 2 is a view of a vertical section, takenon the line 'z x of fig. 1.
In constructing my ash-sifter, I make a strong box, A, as shown in figs. `l and Zand provide it with a cover, B, hinged at e, as shown in iig. 2. In the upper part of the box A, 'Irplace n. concave inclined-slide, C,
and extend it about two-thirds of the way from the front to the rear oropposite Side of the box Ans shown in' iig. 1, and to the inner sides of the box A, about the inclined slide C, I attach inclined projections, so that all the coal and ashes thrown into the top ot` the box A will slide down and fall th-rough the opening at the lower end ot the'inclincd slide Ct AThe inclined projections y, I construct so-that on two sides of thc box A the inclined slide C may be supportedby and attached to them, as shown clearly in tig. 2.
Immediately underneath thc slide C und projections g, I place a frame, D, within the bex A,-so as to extend from its inner front to its inner rear side, asshown in tig. 1, but about one-fourth narrower than the box in the opposite direction, as shown in fig. 2, and mount it on rollers a, arranged to run on supporting-pieces It, attached to the inner side et the box A, and near-its bottom, as shown invg. 1.
Within the frame D, I place a wire screen, E, constructed as shown in iig. 2, and so -as to extend diagonally from the upper rear to thelower front side of the frame D, asishewn in lig. 1. At the lower side of the frame D, where the screen E termihates, 4I make a rectangular opening, and attach to the trarne D a delivery-spout, L, which projects through a corresponding opening in the front of the box A, sufficiently large to allow of a lateral movement of the delivery-spout corresponding with the lateral movement ot' the frame D. To the outside ofthe box A, and so as to surround the spout b, I'nttach a cover, c, with an opening, cZ, on its underside. The spout I), I malte so that its bottom and sides may bc eontinuations ofthe bottom and sides ofthe opening in the frame D. i
'lo the under side of the box A, which has an open bottom,.I attach anietal or other suitable circular projecting rim, F, for setting the box ou a barrel, G, er other receptacle fora-shes, and to the frame D a handle, H, which passes loosely through the side of' thebox A, as shown in igi`2.
In operating my sitter, throwthe coal and ashes, or other substanceto bc siftcd, into the upper part'of the box A, and as it slides down and ell" the concave inclined slide C on to thc inclined screen E, I give the screen a rapid reciprocating motion by means of the handle H, which causes the ashes to separate from the coal and full through into the barrel G, while the coal or other substance too coarse to pass through the screen, slides down and drops ont of the hole d, as shown in iig. I.
During this operation no dust can arise, as the whole is coniined within the close box A, and the rim F prevents any from rising from the barrel G. It can be used within the house, if desired, without annoyance from dust. It docs its work thoroughly, and thus secures a great saving of useful material that is otherwise wasted. It is simple in its construction and operation; cleanly in its work; not easily gotten out ot' repair or injured; can be madeatJittlecost, and used by the most unskillt'nl.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isv An ash-sii`ter or sci-eener, consisting ot' the box A, provided with the concave inclined slide C and laterallymoving frame D, lia-ving the inclined screen E and mouth l) attached, and protected by the cover c, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as herein described.
i CHARLES BREASTED.
