To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES G. CADVVAL- LADER, a citizen of the United States,-residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania,haveinvented new and useful Improvementsin Coal and -Ash Sifters for Heaters, &c., of which the following isa specification.

My invention consists of a coal and ash sifter embodying a screen or sifter proper, a portable support therefor adapted to be placed in the base of a heater or stove and not interfere with the shoveling or removal of the ashes therefrom, said support being of skeleton form, so as to be light, strong, and durable, and adapted to be easily handled in locating and removing, it being constructed of parts, as will be hereinafter described, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 represents a perspective viewof a. coal and ash sifter embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of the same, on a reduced scale,including the adjacent portion of a furnace to which the sifter is applied. Fig. 3 represents a front view of said portion of the furnace, including the guard at the door-opening thereto. Fig. 4 represents a vertical section of a modification.

Referring to the drawings,A designates the body of a sieve, and B designates the handle thereof.

O designates a portable stand, which consists of the side pieces D, the legs E, andthe cross pieces or braces F, connecting said side pieces, it being noticed that said braces occupy the rear portion of the stand, while the front portion thereof between the legs and side pieces is open, forming the unobstructed passage G, so that when the stand is placed in the base or ash-pit of a furnace or stove, which may be accomplished by horizontally sliding the stand through the opening in the wall of the furnace, heater, or stove leading to said ash-pit, so as to occupy the bottom of said ash-pit, the sieve is supported on said bottom and may be worked to sift the coal and ashes, after which the fine ashes may be shoveled or otherwise removed from the pit through the passage G without being obstructed by the stand.

ing J of the ash-pit door during sifting, said guard consisting of a plate provided with an elongated slot K for the reception and play of the handle B of the sieve and hooks L, which are secured to the upper and lower portions of said plate and project, respectively, upwardly and downwardly, the upper hooks being the longer, so that when the upper hooks are inserted under the upper wall of said opening J and the plate is raised the lower hooks clear the lower wall of said opening. Then the plate is lowered and both sets of hooks are engaged with the walls of the opening, and the guard is accordingly connected in position so that when the sieve is operated the opening J is closed, although the door therefor is open, and thus dustin the pit is prevented from escaping therefrom.

Where an ash-pit door is provided with a draft-door, asin Fig. 4:, the latter-named door 'may be raised so as to be'above the handle 13, whereby sieving or screening may be readily accomplished and the ash-pit door may be opened to permit the removal and reapplication of the sifter in a convenient manner without interference of. said draftdoor.

Various-changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention, and I do not,therefore,desire to be limited in each case to the same.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'

1. In a coal and ash sifter, a sieve and a portable stand therefor, said stand consisting of side pieces, legs thereon and means for connecting said legs back of the front, leaving an unobstructed passage between said side pieces and the adjacent legs at the front.

2. In a coal and ash sifter, a portable stand of, skeleton form adapted to be slid horizontally in upon the bottom of the ash-pit of a stove, the same being constructed of side pieces, legs thereon and a cross-brace connected with said side pieces back of the front,

leaving an unobstructed passage between said side pieces and legs at the front.
