UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM J. KAYSER, OF
MILWAUKEE, VISCONSIN.
ASH-S-lFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,272, dated May 14, 1889.
Application led February ll, 1889. Serial No. 299,410. (N o model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. KAYsER, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and in the State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash- Sifters; and I do hereby declare that the following' is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to ash-sifters, and will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a detail.
A is the box, and B the handle, which latter is fitted in the end pieces of the box.
C is a false bottom, which is of reticulated wire or perforated metal, and beneath this a shelving bottom, D, is secured in the box with a transverse opening, E, in its center. The sides of the box project below the bottom D and inclose it. The false bottom terminates at its rear end in a shoe, O, of metal, and there is a horizontal opening, K, in the rear end of the box, which opening is closed by a door, I, that is hinged to the sides of the box, as at a. A hook, L, projects from the rear of this door, and the looped end H of a sliding rod M, that fits in a vertical opening in the end of the box, is adapted for engagement with this hook, so that the door may be opened by drawing upon rod M, and then when the rod is released the door will be closed by its own weight.
The top F of the box is provided with two castings, G and G', each of which forms a loop or guide that fits loosely on handle B. The casting G is formed with a flange, g, that is secured to the top of the box by screws,
while casting G is screwed to the under side of the top.
The castings G and G one of which is located outside and the other inside the box, form a permanent attachment for the lid, as the handle passes through both ends of the box and at the same time permits the lid to be moved freely to close or unclose the box.
When the box isY to lbe used, the top is drawn from over it and the ashes dumped therein and the top replaced'. The box is then held over a barrel or any other suitable receptacle and shaken, the ashes falling through the false bottom and opening E while the particles of coal remain on bottom C. The door can now be lifted and the coal dumped shoe forming a guide to properly direct it.
Having thus fully described my invention,
Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in an ash-sitter, of the box and handle passing through one end thereof and secured in the other end, and the sliding top provided with loops through which the outside and the other inside the box, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM J. KAYSER.
Witnesses:
S. S. STOUT, WILLIAM KLUG.
