Description

Patentd Aug. 23,1921.
WITNESSES:
ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES,
PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK SCHANG, OF NEW YORK, N.Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE LORSCHEIDER-SCHA NG 00., me, or aocnssrrm, NEW YORK, A conroimrrox or NEW YORK.
I RECEPTACLE on CONTAINER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 4, 1918. Serial No. 220,298.
to the. accompanying drawings, forming a."
part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
My present invention relates to special re;
ceptacles and more particularly to the paper boxes in which face powder is packaged for the market and the invention has for its object to provide a box or container of this character that will confine the powder in a satisfactory manner and yet allow access to it for the purpose of sampling it and obtaining its odor, while also providing above themain powder holding chamber an auxiliary upper compartment in which may be kept conveniently at hand, and protected from dust, any appropriate toilet articles. A further ob ect of the invention is to provide a construction of box that will lend itself to decoration and the refinement of appearance required in containers of this kind. To these and other ends the invention resides in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is. a vertical central section through a powder box constructed in accordance with and illustrating one embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a. top plan view of the box with both lids or covers removed, and 1 Fig. 3 is abottom plan new of the inner Similar reference numerals throughout the several views indicate the same parts.
In the present instance, I have shown a circular or cylindrical box, the body of which is composed of two attached walls 1 and-2 of unequal height, the former being the shorter to 006 rate with the flange 3 of a cover 4 that 1s guided on and hel by the inner wall 2 but which is spaced from the upper edge thereof, this bein a familiar construction for pill boxes an others to produce a regular exterior surface. The
bottom of the container is indicated at 1 and the component parts of bothbody and cover are held together by pasted strips 5 and by an ornamental aper covering 6.
\Vithin the body of t e outer container I place the powder receptacle 7 which is also cylindrical and which, in the present instance, is provided with a bottom 8 to which the side walls are secured by pasters 9. The top 10 of the receptacle preferabl rests within the side walls, being fixedly lield by a paper facing 11, and both of these elements 10,- 11, lie below the rim or edge of the inner wall 2 of the outerreceptacle. Centrally of the topwall 10 I provide a relatively small aperture 12, preferably circular, through which limited access may be had to a body of powder P within the inner container 7. In addition, the latter is completely covered by a lid 13 that lies fiat upon the top 10 and occupies a spare between it and the of the wall 2 which it also fits entrally of the lid 13 on its under rim or ed n l side 1s secured a cylindrical plug or stopper 14 that fits the aperture 12 and when the lid is in place as in Fig. 1, it closes this aperture tightly against the escape of the powder which cannot sift past it. When it is desired to remove the lid 13, it may be raised by means of a tab 15 atone edge and the leverage provided by its reaction against the opposite side of the top 10 causes the stopper 14 to be easily withdrawn from the opening 12.
A box constructed in accordance with my invention may be made as attractive as desired from the exterior and in addition, the inner cover or lid 13 offers az'carrier for any inner decorations that itis desired to apply. It so fits both containers as to present an attractive appearance when the cover- 4 is removed and b removing this lid 13, the bod of powder I may be sampled without di guring the package and without detracting from its subsequent tightness. F urthermore, the detachable inner lid 13 serves as the temporary rigid floor of an upper auxiliary compartment 17 formed below and within the main receptacle cover 4. This compartment 17 may be utilized as a convenient holder for any ap ropriate toilet articles, such as powder pu set, which will be fully protected from dust when the main cover 4 is applied uponthe receptacle walls 1, 2. After the package Patented Aug. 23, 1921.
or a manicure has been purchased and it is desired to use a larger opening than the opening 12,the fixed powder receptacle top 10 may be removed by cutting its covering 11 along the scored or dotted line 16 shown in Fig. 2, and should the top 10 be thus removed, the applied lid 13 "will still cover and protect the powder P from dustand preserve its odor, either independently of or jointly With the main cover 4.
It is obvious that this improved receptacle or container may have any desired size and general form, and may be made of paper,
fiber, metal or other materials or combinations thereof, as any particular use may suggest or require.
I claim as my invention 1, A receptacle comprising outer and inner containers, the inner container includ fixed top having an aperture, a removab e outside cover applicable to the outer container walls, a removable lid applicable over the inner container and closely fitting Within the outer container side Walls, and a stopper fixed to said lid and closing the aperture in the top of the inner containerwhen the lid is applied thereover.
2. A receptacle comprising outer and'inner containers, the inner container including a fixed top having an aperture, a removable outside cover applicable to the outer container Walls, a removable lid applicable over the inner container, and a stopper fixed to said lid and closing the aperture in the top of the inner container when the lid is applied thereover, the outer receptacle cover having a marginal depth providing between its 'top wall and the removable inner container lid an auxiliary storage compartment for toilet articles.
3. In a face powder receptacle, the combination with an outer container, of an inner container of less height than the outer container and having a relatively small centralaperture in its top to permit sampling its contents, a cover for the outer contamer, and 21V cover for the inner container lying below the rim of the outer container to close the top thereof, said last mentioned cover being provided on its under side with a stopper adapted to plug the central opening in the top of the inner container.
