Description

0Ct. 25, w HOLLOWAY CONTAINER Filed Aug. 21, 1929 INVENTOR WM 741 Patented Oct. 25, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE I WILLIAM H. HOLLOWAY, 01? OAK PARK, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOB TO AMERICAN CAN (10M- IANY OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY CONTAINER Application filed August 21, 1929. Serial No. 387,514.
containers adapted for use in packing, transporting and merchandising various substances.
The principal object of the present invention is the provision of a container body having a removable cover adapted to be sprung over the upper end of the container and to be removably held thereon.
An important object of the invention is the provision of a container provided with a frangible closure member clamped in the upper end of a container body formed to rigidly hold the frangible closure member and to provide a recess for engagement with the depending flange of a removable cover.
A further important object of the present invention is the provision of a removable cover for a container having an improved flange construction whereby the cover is easily sprung over the upper end of the container body and is prevented from accidental displacement.
An important object of the present invention is the provision of a specially formed container body having a supporting shoulder for the reception of a frangible closure member, the shoulder extending over and adjacent to an external recess formed in the container body and adapted to receive the edge of the depending flange of a specially formed removable cover which is sprung into position on the upper end of the container body above the closure member.
Numerous other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, discloses a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawing 2-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved container and removable cover.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the container and the cover shown in separated position.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional detail of the assembled container and cover.
The present invention relates to a container comprising a body 11 to which is secured a bottom 12. The upper end of the wall of container 11 is bent inwardly at 13 (Fig. 3) and preferably projects beyond the remalning wall of the container at this place, the bend providing an inclined wall 14 which is thence bent outwardly at 15 to provide a horizontal shoulder or ledge 16 extending into an upwardly and inwardly curved wall 17 forming an annular curl.
A frangible closure member 21 of fibre or other suitable material is positioned in the upper end of the container with its margin 22 resting on shoulder 16 and clamped in position by the edge of the curled wall 17. This provides a seal for the top of the container and holds the frangible closure member 21 in stretched position.
The cooperation of the wall 14 and shoulder 16 at the bend 15 sets off an annular recess 23 formed in the outer periphery of the container.
A removable cover is provided for attachment to the container which protects the frangible closure member 21 during shipment or other handling and which acts as a re-closure for the container after it has been opened by the cutting away of member 21. This removable cover comprises a central panel 24 located adjacent to a wall 25 extending into a depending flange 26 terminating in an edge part 27. The edge part or edge 27 is preferably slit as at 28 to form a series of spaced projections 29 and the depending flange 26 is provided with a knurled surface 31 which ofiers a convenient handhold for the cover.
The outer diameter of the curl 17 is greater than the outer diameter of the annular recess 23 and the shoulder 16 and curl 17 thus form a ledge overhanging the recess 23. The depending flange 26 of the removable cover is greater in diameter than the diameter of the curl 17, but the inwardly turned edge 27 thereof is of a less diameter than the curl. Made resilient by the slits 28, this edge 27 permits easy attachment of the cover to the container by a springing outwardly of the edges of the spaced projections 29 over the upper end of the container.
In assembled position of the container and cover, the wall 25 of the cover rests upon the upper surface or ledge of the curl 17 and the inwardly turned edges 27 of the spaced 5 projections 29 extend into the recess 23 and beneath the shoulder 16. The cover is thus held against displacement on the upper end of the container, but can be easily removed therefrom. In this removal the inwardly turnededges' of the projections 29 are again sprung outwardly to permit passing thereof over the head 17. The application of the cover to the container and its removal is thus an easy matter, the knurled surface 31 permitting a secure hold on the cover during these actions. i
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing. description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages,- the uform hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. A container comprising a body having an annular recess in its outer wall extending around its periphery and located adjacentits top end and having an annular ledge formed in the body above said recess, the extreme edge of the body being bent inward and downward to oppose said ledge, a frang- Sg; ible cover having its margin secured between said ledge and said extreme edge of the body, and a removable cover havin a depending flange and an annular knurle surface adjacent, said flange terminating in a plurality of inwardly turned edges adapted to be sprung outwardly by said ledge when said cover is applied to the container body and then to spring inwardly under said ledge and into said recess to hold the cover on the con- -tainer body. I
2. The combination of a sheet metal body having its side walls extended out radially to a point not less than the radial extension of the cover, and having the upper part of the .9:body bent inward and thence upward and outward and thenceinward and downward to form an exterior recess and an interior ledge and also a downwardly presented edge opposedto said ledge, a frangible cover supported by said'ledge, the extreme edge 'of the body being engaged with the frangible cover to hold the same against said ledge, and a removable cover resting on the top bend of the n body and having a flexible depending flange l-engagmg 1n said exterior recess of the body.
