Description

Jan. 4, 1938- E. E. WOOD GARBAGE CAN LINER Filed March 16, 1936 INVENTUR. HJ/E W000 ATTORN Patented Jan. 4, 1938 PATENT OFFICE GARBAGE CAN LINER Elsie E. Wood,
Whittier, Calif.
Application March 16, 1936, Serial No. 69,116
4 Claims.
This invention relates to garbage can liners.
The general object of my invention is to provide a garbage can liner which is made of paper impregnated with wax or other suitable material which may obtain an antiseptic and wherein the liner includes an upper rim portion adapted to engage the rim of a garbage can and to be clamped thereto by the lid.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide a novel garbage can liner including a folded-over rim portion which is interlocked to securely hold the parts assembled.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel collapsible liner for a garbage can.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combination garbage can and liner wherein novel means is provided for holding the liner in the can and for providing a tight seal when the lid is in position.
Other objects and the advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a central, sectional view through a garbage can showing my liner placed therein;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary, sectional view showing the rim of a garbage can ith the liner therein and the lid engaging the liner;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary, sectional view through the upper portion of the liner;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the liner is made;
Fig. 5 is a plan view showing a step in the folding of the blank;
Fig. 6 is a similar view showing another step;
Fig. '7 is a view similar to Fig. 5 showing another step;
Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the folded liner;
Fig. 9 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken on line 9-9 of Fig. 8; and
Fig. 10 is a perspective view looking towards the bottom portion of the liner and showing the liner collapsed.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters I have indicated my invention generally at l0 as comprising a garbage can II and a liner l2 which is disposed therein. v
The garbage can is preferably made of metal and includes a bottom l3, a side l4, with a bail l5 pivotally mounted on the side. The upper portion of the side of the garbage can is rolled over as at It to form a loop which stifiens the upper portion of the garbage can.
The garbage can is provided with a lid ll having a handle l8 and having a peripheral flange H which coacts with the upper end of the liner and bead I6 to form a. tight seal, as will be presently described.
My liner is preferably made from a blank shown at in Fig. 4 and this blank is preferably cut from a good grade of paper and is preferably impregnated with wax to which a suitable sterilizing material may be added if desired.
The blank 26 has a circular periphery 2| and is provided with a pair of concentric score lines 22 and 23 with the line 22 disposed nearer the periphery 2| than to the line 23 so that annular portions a and b are provided.
The blank is further provided with a central, circular score line 24 to form a circle c which is concentric with the score lines 22 and 23 and with the periphery 2|. Extending inwardly from the periphery 2| are a plurality of pairs of score lines 25 which score lines extend to the inner circle 24 and are parallel to each other to form portions d which are disposed at right angles to each other.
Additional score lines 26 start at the inner circle 24 adjacent the intersection of each score line 25 and the circle 24 and extend outwardly to the circle 23 to form portions 0. The lines 26 are continued to the periphery as diverging score lines 21 as is clearly shown in the drawing to form portions 1.
In the formation of a liner from a scored blank 20 the material of one of the portions a in Fig. 4 is folded upwardly substantially along the line 24 and is then folded outward along the score lines 26 and 26 and the part adjacent to the score line 26 is folded as shown in Fig. 5 to a position wherein the score lines 21 are adjacent a score line 25. The triangular portion 21 formed by the score lines 21 is then folded inward as clearly shown in Fig. 6.
Thereafter the material is folded outward along a line 26 and the line 25 is then folded as shown in Fig. 7 to a position wherein it overlaps the previously folded portion and score lines 26 are adjacent the score line 25. The triangular portion 21 formed by the score lines 21 is then folded inward similar to the triangular portions 21 An enlarged view of one completed folded section or panel is shown in Fig. 9. The material is folded in order along all the sets of score lines as just described until the blank is completed folded to the position shown in Fig. 8. Thereafter the upper edge of the material is folded downward along the line 22 to form a folded portion 33 and thereafter the material is again folded downward along the'line The line 26 a 23 to form a portion 34. When the upper edge is thus folded the portion 34 extends downward and the portion 33 extends upward as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
In use the liner is shipped in the condition shown in Fig. 10 and when received by the housewife it is opened out and placed in the garbage can with the portion b ofthe liner extending downwardly as shown in Fig. 2 and with the portion a of the liner extending upwardly and engaging under the loop I6, so that when the lid I1 is raised the liner will not be raised with it but will hold by its engagement under the bead.
passing through a hole at each side of the liner.
These projecting portions 31 can be grasped thus allowing the liner to be removed without touching the same.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have provided a novel garbage can liner which is simple in construction and which can be economically manufactured.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. A blank for making a garbage can liner comprising a circular piece of paper having an inner circular, central, score line defining the bottom of the liner and having a pair of outer, circular, spaced, scores concentric with said first circular score and a plurality of pairs of parallel scores extending from the periphery of said blank to said inner, central, circular score and a plurality of radial scores each extending from the juncture of one of said parallel scores and the circular, central score to the inner one of the pair of outer circular scores and a pair of diverging scores extending outwardly from the intersection of each of said radial scores and said inner one of the pair of outer circular scores.
2. A blank for making a garbage can liner comprising a circular piece of paper having an inner circular, central, score line defining the bottom of the liner and having a pair of outer, circular, spaced, scores concentric withsaid first circular score and a plurality of pairs of parallel scores extending from the periphery of said blank to said inner, central, circular score and a plurality of radial scores each extending from the juncture of one at said parallel scores and the circular, central score to the inner one of the pair of outer circular scores and a 'pair of diverging scores extending outwardly from the' intersection of each of said radial scores and said inner one of the pair of outer circular scores, said blank-within said inner, central, circular score having a transversely extending score and having a pair of diverging scores extending outwardly from the ends of the central score and terminating at the inner circular score.
3. A garbage can liner comprising a body made of a single piece of paper including an upwardly directed side wall, an integral downwardly extending rim on said body and an integral upwardly extending rim on said first rim, said second rim being disposed within said first rim and a pull member inserted between said rims and having spaced portions projecting through said downwardly extending rim of the body.
4. The combination oi a garbage can comprising a metal receptacle including a continuous side wall having a continuous resilient, outwardly, extending bead thereon and a bottom and a liner comprising a bodymade of a single piece of paper and including a bottom portion engaging the bottom of the receptacle and an upwardly directed plaited side wall engaging the inside of the receptacle, an integral, continuous,
downwardly extending rim on said body, the 'upper portion of said rim being spaced from the side wall to provide a space receiving the resilient bead of the garbage can the lower portion of the rims being directed towards the side wall and an integral upwardly extending rim on said first rim, said second rim being substantially concentric with and in engagement with said cylindrical side wall and disposed within said first rim and terminating short of the upper end of the first rim, said second rim engaging beneath the bead of the garbage can and a lid on the garbage can, said lid having a downwardly extending flange thereon, said lid flange urging said first rim against the bead to provide a tight seal.
