Description
March 30, 1937. w. B. HOMMEL CAN DRINKING RIM Filed July 18, 19:55
INVENTOR I fimjfmna ATTORNEY WITNESS Patented Mar. 30, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CAN DRINKING RM William B. Hommel, Geneva, N. Y. Application July 18, 1935, Serial No. 32,109
1 Claim.
contents of the said can can be drunk and thus eliminating the requirement for dispensing the contents of the can into a glass or other drinking article, the rim or collar being useful in the drinking of fruit juices, beer or other liquid contents directly from a receptacle of the can type.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a rim or collar of this character, wherein its construction permits the joining of the same with a can when opened without liability of leaking at the joint when in the act of drinking the contents of the can.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a rim or collar of this character, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efiicient in its operation, readily and easily applied to and removed from a can, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a can, the same being partly broken away and showing the rim or collar constructed in accordance with the invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view through a portion of the can and the rim or collar.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the rim or collar.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing a slight modification.
Figure 5 is a view similar to a further modification.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, particularly Figures 1 to 3, the rim or collar comprises a circular body It having a flared outer mouth edge I I while the opposite inner edge l2 has formed therein an annular seat l3 provided by an internal shoulder I4 to accommodate the lap seamed marginal edge I5 of a can I6 for the fitting of Figure 4 showing the rim or collar upon the end of the can which is opened at H to permit the drinking of the contents of such can.
The body It at one point is formed with a slit it which extends for a distance inwardly of said 5 body and opens through the edge ii, the purpose of the slit 98 being to enable the snug fitting of the rim or collar upon the can.
The edge 02 at the inner face thereof has the beveled portion 09 which trance of the can end to the seat 43. The rim or collar constituted by the body it is shown applied to the can it in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing.
permits of the easy en- 10 In Figure 4 of the drawing there is shown a 15 slight modification wherein the rim or collar is made from sheet-like material folded on itself to provide the inner and outer walls 2t and M, respectively, with the fold outwardly curled as at 22 to present a mouth edge outermost of the body while presented at the inner end are the flanges Z3 and M, respectively, the flange 23 being bent on itself to provide an annular seat 25 for accommodating the edge 26 of the can 27.
This edge 26 of the can 21 is frictionally held be- 2 tween the flanges 23 and 2d and within the seat 25 in the separable mounting of the rim or collar upon the can.
In Figure 5 of the drawing there is shown a further modification wherein the rim or collar is formed with a single wall body 28, this at its inner end having bent outwardly therefrom the annular grip flange 29 providing a seat 30 therein for the edge 3i of the can 32, the flange being formed with a contracted latching lip 33 for the clamping of the can edge 3i in the seat 30 of the rim or collar.
It is, of course, understood that the rim or collar in the preferred and modified forms of construction can be made of any and meeting the requirements for continued use or durability. It is contemplated to make the rim or collar from paper, metal, composition material or otherwise. The rim or collar, when rematerial desirable I moved from the can, can be readily washed or cleaned for sanitary purposes and when on the can the contents can be drunk and thus avoiding the pouring of the same into a glass or other receptacle.
The construction disclosed in Figures 4 and 5 of the drawing may be made from sanitary paper to be used and disposed of with the can.
It is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be made in the invention as fall properly within the scope of the ap- 5 pended claim without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What is claimed is:
A rim or the character described comprising a circular body of uniform height throughout and having an unbroken outer end, and an annular seat at the inner end of said body for accommodating an end of a. can body, the inner end 10 of said circular body being walled throughout WILLIAM B. HOWEL-
